IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Write at least 150 words.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

The given diagram illustrates the pathway of how a bamboo fabric is made from scratch. It starts with the bamboo plant and nine detailed steps to make bamboo fabric.

The first step involves planting bamboo plants and spring is the best season for planting. Farmers wait till autumn to harvest this plant manually as it is fully grown and developed. It is moved forward by cutting the stem into small strips. This process usually takes place with the help of a saw machine. Strips are further crushed to extract the liquid out of them. This thick syrup is called liquid pulp and it consists of long bamboo fibres and stem juices.

Liquid pulp is subjected to a manual filteration process where filter paper separated the fibres fom the liquid. Fibres are collected above the filter paper. In order to soften the rough and thick fibres, water and amine oxide are added to start a chemcial reaction. The soften fibres are spinned in the next step to make a yarn. The soft thread of the yarn is futher weaved to make the fabric , which is then stitched into different shapes and send to warehouses or markets.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You cover the main sequence from planting in spring through harvesting, processing the fibres, spinning yarn and weaving fabric, and you include useful details such as adding water and amine oxide. However, some stages are less fully or accurately reported. The diagram shows the finished fabric being made into clothing items, but “stitched into different shapes” and “send to warehouses or markets” are not shown. The description of filtering also adds unsupported details about filter paper and fibres being collected above it. Your opening says there are “nine detailed steps,” but the overview could more clearly summarise the process as a whole, for example by distinguishing the growing and harvesting stages from the later manufacturing stages. Keep the account closely tied to the diagram and avoid inferred details.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The response follows the process in a clear chronological order, and sequencing phrases such as “The first step,” “In the next step” and “further” help the reader track the stages. The paragraphing into an introduction and a main process description is also appropriate. This gives the account a logical progression from planting to the final products. To make the organisation more effective, add a distinct overview that groups the stages, rather than relying mainly on the opening sentence to introduce the sequence. Some links are slightly mechanical, and “It is moved forward” has an unclear reference; naming the bamboo or strips directly would make the connection between stages more precise. Overall, the progression is clear, with room for more flexible linking and clearer referencing.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use a reasonable range of process vocabulary, including “harvest,” “crushed,” “liquid pulp,” “fibres,” “soften” and “yarn,” which helps explain the manufacturing stages. There are also attempts at more specific language, such as “manually” and “chem[ical] reaction.” However, some choices are inaccurate or unsupported: “filter paper” and “thick syrup” are not specified in the diagram, while “spinned” and “weaved” are incorrect forms. Spelling errors such as “filteration,” “fom,” “chemcial” and “futher” also reduce precision. Aim for accurate, natural collocations and use the diagram’s terms where possible; this will make your vocabulary more reliable without needing to add speculative technical detail.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including the time clause “Farmers wait till autumn to harvest…” and the purpose clause “In order to soften…”. Most of the process remains understandable, but some grammatical errors persist. For example, “The soften fibres are spinned” has an incorrect verb form, and “which is then stitched … and send” does not maintain agreement and parallel verb forms. In “a bamboo fabric,” the article is unnecessary, while “filter paper separated the fibres” shifts awkwardly into the past tense within a present-tense process description. Review passive constructions and keep the present tense consistent when describing a diagram. More accurate control of these forms would strengthen the otherwise clear account.
