IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Write at least 150 words.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The diagram shows the process of manufacturing of fabric from bamboo. Bamboo is processed through different steps in order to convert it into garments. At start, bamboo is planted then later on after harvesting and cutting. It goes through variety of steps to convert into yarn, which is later on weaved into our desired clothes.

The process begins with the plantation of bamboo in spring season. Then later on it got harvested in autumn season. Then it is cut into small strips and crushed to make a liquid pulp. That pulp is then filtered in order to seperate the long fibres from liquid.

In order to soften the fibres water and some chemicals like amine oxide are added. Then the mixture obtain is spinned to turn it into yarn. The yarn is then weaved into the fabric of different pattern and colors which is used to make different clothes like socks and shirts.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You cover the main stages from planting and seasonal harvesting through processing, yarn production and the finished garments. The overview in the opening paragraph identifies the transformation into yarn and clothing, and the body gives a generally accurate account of the sequence, including filtering long fibres from liquid and adding water and amine oxide to soften them. However, some details are less fully or precisely reported: the diagram shows the final yarn being woven into fabric and then made into clothing, while “different pattern and colors” is not shown. The overview could also more clearly summarise the process as a whole, for example by distinguishing the agricultural stages from the later manufacturing stages. This would make the key features more complete and firmly grounded in the diagram.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a coherent overall arrangement: an introductory overview is followed by the early stages and then the later processing stages. Sequencing words such as “Then,” “In order to,” and “Then” help the reader follow the process, and the stages are presented in the correct order. This meets the lower-band expectation of an organised response and shows some of the flexibility associated with stronger cohesion. However, repeated use of “Then” makes the links somewhat mechanical, and the first paragraph’s “At start” sentence is awkwardly connected and does not clearly express the sequence. Use a wider range of transitions, such as “Following this” or “Once the fibres have been softened,” and group the stages into clearer phases to make progression smoother.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of process vocabulary, including “harvesting,” “crushed,” “liquid pulp,” “filtered,” and “fibres,” which helps communicate the manufacturing stages. Some less common terms, such as “amine oxide,” are used appropriately. There are, however, several inaccurate word forms or collocations: “manufacturing of fabric” is less natural than “manufacturing fabric,” “weaved” should be “woven,” and “spinned” should be “spun.” “Plantation” is also less precise here than “planting,” while “some chemicals like” is informal and imprecise for this report. These choices do not prevent understanding, but more accurate process vocabulary and spelling would improve precision and control.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You use both simple sentences and some longer structures, including “That pulp is then filtered in order to separate…” and “In order to soften the fibres…,” so there is some variety. The sequence is generally understandable, but some grammatical errors remain. For example, “At start” needs an article (“At the start”), and “it got harvested” shifts awkwardly into the past tense within a description otherwise written in the present. In “the mixture obtain is spinned,” the participle and verb form are incorrect; a passive construction such as “the resulting mixture is spun” would be clearer. The opening sentence “At start, bamboo is planted then later on after harvesting and cutting” is also incomplete in its structure. More consistent present-tense passives and careful checking of verb forms would strengthen accuracy.
