IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Write at least 150 words.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
In the overall flow chart, it illustrates about the process of "How bamboo fabric is made". It shows the step by step tasks performed to make fabric.
The process of making it, starts with planting bamboo in the spring season of the year. When it is fully grown, then it is harvested in the autumn season of the year. Next step is to cut down bamboos into strips with blades. The fourth step is to crush all the strips, so that the liquid pulp is obtained from it. To separate things, filteration process is done to get raw and long fibres from fluid. Making the raw fibres soft , needs to additional things i.e. water and amine oxide. After getting smooth soften fibers, it's strings are rolled up to make yam. The second last step is to weave the yam to make fabric out of it. The last and final step is to make cloths from the bamboo fabric with the help of machines.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You cover the main sequence from planting in spring through harvesting, processing the fibres, weaving, and producing clothing. The seasonal details and the addition of water and amine oxide are accurately included, and the stages are generally relevant. However, the opening does not provide a clear overview of the process’s main phases; it mainly repeats that the diagram shows how fabric is made. Some details are imprecise or unsupported: the diagram shows cutting with a saw, not simply “blades,” and the final clothing stage is shown but does not specify that machines are used. The description also gives limited emphasis to the transformation from bamboo strips to yarn and then fabric. A concise overview and more exact reporting of the depicted stages would make the account more complete and clear.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The stages are presented in a mostly logical order, and sequencing expressions such as “Next step,” “The fourth step,” and “The last and final step” help the reader follow the process. The response also separates its introductory statement from the process description. However, the first paragraph repeats the task rather than giving a useful overview, and the second paragraph is a long sequence of steps with little grouping or variation in transitions. Some links are awkward, as in “To separate things, filteration process is done,” which makes the relationship between crushing and filtering less clear. Organising the account into an overview and two connected process phases, while using more precise references between stages, would improve progression and cohesion.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant process vocabulary, including “harvested,” “strips,” “liquid pulp,” “fibres,” “weave,” and “fabric,” so the reader can understand the general production sequence. There are also attempts at more specific terms, such as “amine oxide.” However, several word choices or forms are inaccurate or unnatural: “yam” is used for “yarn,” “filteration” for “filtration,” and “cloths” where “clothing” or “garments” is intended. Phrases such as “separate things” and “additional things” are vague, while “smooth soften fibers” is awkward. Aim for precise process vocabulary and check spelling and collocations; this would make the description more fluent and reduce moments of uncertainty.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response includes both simple statements and some attempts at longer structures, for example, “The fourth step is to crush all the strips, so that the liquid pulp is obtained from it.” The sequence remains understandable, but grammatical control is uneven. The opening, “In the overall flow chart, it illustrates about the process,” has an unclear subject and an unnecessary preposition. Other examples include “The process of making it, starts,” where the comma interrupts the subject and verb, and “Making the raw fibres soft, needs to additional things,” which has an incorrect verb pattern. There are also inconsistent constructions such as “After getting …, it's strings are rolled up.” Practise accurate subject–verb patterns, articles, and infinitive structures, and proofread punctuation to make the longer sentences more reliable.
