IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Write at least 150 words.

Student answer (Band 5.0)

The diagram gives information about the stages involved in the process of bamboo fabric from a particularly type of tree called bamboo.

Overall, The process follow a linear multi-stages sequence that begins with planting bamboo plants and ends with colthes, making from bamboo plant. During this process some indegrients are added and filtered.

Initially, bamboo plants are planted in the spring seson. After growing adult in the autumn season within 6 to 8 months period plants are harvested by farmers. After which, these plants are placed on a round shape cutting equipment to cut into strips. Once the cutting has been done the other external indegrients (water and amine oxide) are added, making these strips into soften fibres.

Then, a purified filter is used to separate long fibres from remaining liquid. subsequently, these strips then crushed to make a liquid pilup. In the seventh stage

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0

You identify the process as beginning with planting and ending with clothing, and you include the seasonal planting and harvesting stages. However, the account is incomplete and contains important sequencing errors: crushing occurs before filtering, and the fibres are softened with water and amine oxide only after filtering. Your description reverses these stages and then stops at “In the seventh stage,” without explaining spinning, weaving, or the final clothing products. The overview is also limited, and the claim that harvesting follows 6–8 months is not shown in the diagram. The response is 145 words, below the required 150. To improve, accurately cover the full sequence and give a concise overview of how the raw bamboo is processed into fabric and garments.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

There is some organisation: you provide an opening, an overview, and a chronological account using markers such as “Initially” and “Then.” This gives the reader a basic sense of progression. However, the sequence becomes difficult to follow because the stages are reported out of order: softening is placed before filtering and crushing, while crushing is mentioned later. The final sentence is unfinished, and the paragraphing does not clearly separate the overview from the detailed stages. Some linking phrases, including “After which” and “subsequently,” do not connect the steps smoothly. Arrange the stages in the diagram’s exact order, use clear paragraph breaks, and complete the account through the final products.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some relevant process vocabulary, including “harvested,” “strips,” “fibres,” “filter,” and “separate,” so the topic is generally recognisable. However, the range is limited and several spelling and word-choice errors make parts harder to understand, such as “colthes,” “indegrients,” “pilup,” and “seson.” Some expressions are also unnatural or imprecise: “adult” does not clearly describe the bamboo’s growth, and “round shape cutting equipment” is less suitable than a direct description of a circular saw. Aim for accurate process terms and check spelling carefully. More precise verbs such as “crush,” “soften,” “spin,” and “weave” would also help you describe each stage clearly.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more extended sentences, for example, “Once the cutting has been done…” and “After growing adult in the autumn season…” However, errors are frequent, and some sentence structures are incomplete or difficult to interpret. The opening has faulty phrasing in “the process of bamboo fabric,” while “The process follow” has a subject–verb agreement error. The sentence beginning “After growing adult…” lacks a clear grammatical connection between the plants’ growth and harvesting. Capitalisation after the overview’s “Overall,” is also inconsistent, and the final phrase “In the seventh stage” is left unfinished. Use complete sentences with clear subjects and verbs, maintain consistent tense, and proofread agreement and punctuation.
