IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Write at least 150 words.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The process demonstrate the method of manufactured fabric from bamboo.

Overall, the process commence with plantation of bamboo and end by obtaining shocks and t-shirts. Process undergoes multiple stages as shown in the diagram.

Initially, the plantation of bamboo is started in spring season that favours yield of crops . Then, bamboo is chopped during autumn season and each bamboo passed through sharp machine that cut it into strips. Following this, each strips are crushed using the crusher and converted into the liquid pulp. Further, the obtained liquid pulp undergoes filteration where its long fibres are separated from the liquid.

Secondly, the filtered fiber is subjected to (water and amine oxide) the mixture inorder to make it soft. Accordingly, the fiber is obtained and spinned to make yarn in ball shape. Then, the obtained yarn is weaved by crossing threads inorder to prepare fabric. Finally, the process end by obtaining desired clothes through fabric that is collected through bamboo.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You cover the main stages from planting bamboo in spring through harvesting, processing the fibres, spinning yarn and producing fabric and clothing. The overview identifies the start and end points, and the body includes useful details such as the autumn harvest and the addition of water and amine oxide. These features show a clear understanding of the process. Some details are less fully or precisely reported: the final stage is shown as clothing items made from the fabric, while “shocks” appears to mean socks, and the description of weaving adds an explanation about crossing threads that is not stated in the diagram. To strengthen the response, describe the stages more directly and ensure each detail matches the visual.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall sequence and is divided into an introduction, an overview and two body paragraphs. Sequencing expressions such as “Initially,” “Following this,” “Secondly” and “Finally” help the reader follow the stages. The grouping of the early processing steps and the later fibre-to-fabric steps is also sensible. However, some linking is mechanical, and references such as “the obtained fiber” and “the process” are not always precise. “Accordingly” does not clearly express the relationship between softening and spinning. Use a smaller range of accurate transitions and make each stage’s subject explicit—for example, state that the softened fibres are spun into yarn—so progression feels smoother and connections are clearer.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant process vocabulary, including “harvested,” “strips,” “liquid pulp,” “fibres,” “yarn” and “fabric,” which allows you to describe the diagram’s main stages. There are also attempts at more formal wording, such as “undergoes” and “separated.” However, several word choices and forms are inaccurate or unnatural, including “method of manufactured fabric,” “plantation,” “filteration,” “spinned” and “weaved.” “Shocks” also misidentifies the clothing item, and “sharp machine” is vague. These errors sometimes make the description less clear. Build accuracy by learning common process collocations and checking spelling and irregular forms, rather than choosing elaborate wording that does not fit naturally.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and more complex structures, including a relative clause in “each bamboo passed through sharp machine that cut it into strips” and a sequence of linked process clauses. The overall meaning is generally recoverable, but errors in verb forms, agreement, articles and sentence construction remain noticeable. For example, “The process demonstrate” needs subject–verb agreement, “the process commence” has the same issue, and “each strips are crushed” mismatches singular “each” with a plural noun. The passive forms are also inconsistent: “is started” is followed by “each bamboo passed.” Practise consistent present-simple passive forms for process descriptions, and check articles and singular/plural agreement in each sentence.
