IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Write at least 150 words.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
The diagram illustrates the formation of fabric from the bamboo plant, outlining the several stages involved in its continues development.
Overall, the cycle consist of nine stages, begining with bamboo plant and eventually ending with proper fabric. Throughout the process, several stages are outlined that given efficient outcome.
Looking more closely in the initial stages, the process begins wth plant, followed by the its harvesting take place and which then cut into strips.
Then, it is move to the crush strips stage to make the liquid pulp and after that it follows the filter process where separation occur. It seprate long fiber from liquid.
When this stage is completed then it is send to soften fiber where addition of water and amine oxide takes place.Subsequenly, the resulting material is send to spin to make yarn and then follows to weave to make fabric. It is conclued in final stage and results in the formation of fabric.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You identify the process as a sequence and describe several central stages, including planting, harvesting, cutting, crushing, filtering, softening, spinning and weaving. The overview also correctly notes that it has nine stages. However, the overview is vague and partly inaccurate: the diagram is a linear process, not a “cycle,” and the final stage shows clothing items made from the fabric, rather than simply “proper fabric.” Some details are unclear or omitted, such as planting in spring and harvesting in autumn, and the final clothing stage is not explicitly reported. To strengthen the response, give a precise overview of the start and end points, then describe the stages accurately and completely.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a basic paragraph structure, with an introduction, an overview and two paragraphs describing the stages. It generally follows the process order, and connectors such as “Overall,” “Then,” “After that” and “Subsequently” help the reader follow the sequence. However, progression is weakened by awkward or unclear links, for example “followed by the its harvesting take place and which then cut into strips.” The repeated use of “stage” and “process,” along with several short, disconnected statements, makes the description feel mechanical. Improve cohesion by grouping related steps into clear stages and using accurate references, such as “the fibres” or “this material,” so it is always clear what each action applies to.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant process vocabulary, including “harvesting,” “strips,” “liquid pulp,” “filter,” “fibre,” “yarn” and “weave,” which allows the reader to recognise most of the stages. However, the range is limited and some word choices or collocations are inaccurate, such as “proper fabric,” “efficient outcome” and “the formation of fabric.” Several spelling errors—“begining,” “seprate,” “Subsequenly” and “conclued”—also reduce accuracy. Aim for precise process language and avoid vague phrases that do not add information. For example, describe the final stage as producing clothing, and use “the fibres are softened” rather than the less natural “send to soften fiber.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including a relative clause in “where separation occur” and sequencing clauses with “followed by” and “after that.” However, errors are frequent and sometimes make relationships between stages difficult to understand. Examples include “the cycle consist,” “begining with bamboo plant,” “it is move,” and “it is send,” which show problems with agreement, verb forms and passive constructions. The sentence “followed by the its harvesting take place and which then cut into strips” is especially difficult to follow because its clause structure is incomplete. Work on consistent present-simple passives for process descriptions, such as “the bamboo is harvested” and “the strips are crushed,” and check articles, agreement and sentence boundaries.
