IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Write at least 150 words.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
Fabric made from many raw product example cotton, bamboo, sleep wool.
Today we discuss about how we make fabric from bamboo.
-Firstly Farmer plant the bamboo stems in soil and wait to grow them longer. Generally this process is being start in spring season to give best result.
- The starting of autumn mostly Farmer start harvesting and the steam of bamboo mostly cut some inches from bottom to grow again, this is the secound step.
-Third step is to cut the stem into strips.
- Next step is to crush strips to make liquid pulp for good quality of cloth.
-The fifth process is Filteration. Separate the long fibres from liquid.
-To make soften fibres add water and amine oxide to produce bamboo crush to fibres.
-And seventh process is to make spin from fibres to make yarn. Mostly Factory sale this to make weave and direct cloths
-From Many Yarn factory make Weave to make fabric. this is the last process to send weave to cloth making factories
-and the last step is from Weave cuts in patterns to make Final Cloths.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5
You identify the main stages from planting through processing to weaving, and correctly mention spring planting, autumn harvesting, filtering, softening, spinning and weaving. However, the account does not provide a clear overview of the process as a whole, and some details are inaccurate or added without support. For example, the diagram shows the final stage as finished clothing items, not cutting fabric into patterns or sending it to other factories. The claim that bamboo stems are cut “some inches” so they can grow again is also not shown. Several stages are described only briefly, so the response addresses the process incompletely. A concise overview and a more faithful account of the nine stages would make the summary more complete and accurate.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The numbered sequence and repeated markers such as “Firstly,” “Third step,” and “Next step” help readers follow the general order. The response also moves from growing and harvesting to processing and fabric production. However, the hyphen-led format creates a list rather than a clearly organised report, and there is no distinct overview paragraph. Some links between ideas are unclear: “Mostly Factory sale this to make weave” does not clearly show how yarn relates to the next stage. The final two points also repeat weaving and introduce an unsupported clothing-making step. Group the stages into paragraphs, use a brief overview, and connect each stage with clear references to the material being processed.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use relevant process vocabulary, including “harvesting,” “strips,” “liquid pulp,” “fibres,” “yarn,” and “weave,” which allows the reader to recognise many stages. However, the range is limited and several word choices or forms are inaccurate or awkward, such as “raw product,” “steam of bamboo,” “Filteration,” and “make spin.” Spelling errors such as “secound” and “cloths” also reduce precision. Some expressions, including “good quality of cloth,” add an evaluation not conveyed by the diagram. Aim for accurate process collocations and consistent terms—for example, describe bamboo stalks being cut, fibres being softened, and yarn being woven into fabric. This would make the account clearer and more appropriately formal.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The response attempts to show sequence and purpose, for example, “to make liquid pulp” and “to produce bamboo crush to fibres,” but most sentences follow a simple pattern and attempts at longer constructions are often faulty. Errors in verb forms, agreement, articles and sentence boundaries occur frequently: “Farmer plant,” “this process is being start,” and “Mostly Factory sale this” are examples. The sentence “Separate the long fibres from liquid” is also a fragment rather than a complete sentence. These problems sometimes make relationships between stages difficult to understand. Practise forming complete sentences with a clear subject and verb, and check tense and agreement—for instance, “The strips are crushed to produce liquid pulp.”
