IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Write at least 150 words.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The illustrated diagram displays multiple steps of production of a fabric from a bamboo plant.

Overall, it has detail description of bamboo proccessed in factory with help of machines and making of fabrics and clothes. Additonally, informing about growing and plucking it out.

The plantation of bamboo is carried out in the spring; grown bamboo sticks are harvested in autumn. Before crushing these sticks into liquid pulp, it is stripped into fewer piece. Then after, the process of seperating of long fibres from liquid, also known as filteration, is done in machines. Furthermore, long fibres are now soften enough for addition of water and amine oxide in this, which will result in a yarn. A small step of spining is done before making a yarn. Weaving is a next stage where these yarn balls are given a structure to make sqaure piece of a fabric. At last, this fabric is converted into garmentary and ready for industrial use.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You cover the main stages from seasonal planting and harvesting through processing, spinning, weaving and the final clothing products. The overview also recognises that the process combines growing with factory production. However, some details are inaccurate or unclear: the strips are cut into pieces, then crushed to make liquid pulp; the fibres are softened by adding water and amine oxide, rather than being softened before these are added. The account also says the fabric is converted into garments, whereas the diagram shows clothing as the final products without specifying that conversion step. To strengthen the response, describe the sequence and the purpose of each stage more precisely, especially the filtering and softening stages.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a recognisable structure, with an introduction, an overview and a chronological account of the process. Sequencing expressions such as “Before,” “Then after,” “Furthermore” and “At last” help the reader follow the stages. However, the overview is not clearly separated in meaning from the detailed account, and some links are awkward or mechanical. For example, “Before crushing … it is stripped” leaves the reference of “it” unclear, while “A small step of spinning is done before making a yarn” repeats information already given and interrupts the sequence. Organise the stages into clearer groups and use concise links that show the actual order without repeating steps.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant process vocabulary, including “harvested,” “liquid pulp,” “fibres,” “filteration,” “spining” and “weaving,” and some terms show an attempt to describe technical stages. However, several word choices and forms are inaccurate or unnatural, such as “plucking it out,” “fewer piece,” “garmentary” and “given a structure.” Spelling errors in “proccessed,” “Additonally,” “seperating,” “sqaure” and “spining” also reduce precision. These issues do not prevent the reader from understanding the general process, but they limit the range and control of vocabulary. Aim for accurate process collocations and check spelling and word forms carefully.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and more complex sentences, including a passive construction in “The plantation of bamboo is carried out in the spring” and a time clause beginning “Before crushing.” The overall meaning is usually clear, but some grammatical errors affect accuracy. For instance, “it is stripped into fewer piece” has an unclear pronoun reference and incorrect number agreement, while “the process of seperating … is done” is an awkwardly formed clause. The sentence beginning “Furthermore” also has an unclear structure around the fibres and the added substances. Use complete, direct clauses to explain each stage, check singular and plural forms, and make sure pronouns clearly refer to the material being processed.
