IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Write at least 150 words.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

The diagram illustrates the formation of fabric through the bamboo.

Overall, the diagram shows that how a fabric is made through the bamboo and this process comes up with 9 different complex stages of production which includes cuting, harvesting, filter and many other crucial stages.

Firstly, the bamboo plants are being growed in the season of spring which takes many months to grow. The plants get ready for the harvest by autumn season. Once the plants get ready then the harvested bamboos are being cut into diffrent strips to make soften fibres through these strips by adding water and amine oxide in it. The long fibers are being separated from the liquid in the filtering process. After the completion of filter process, these long strips are crushed to make liquid pulp. The liquid pulp is then spin to make yarn. Now the smooth yarn is ready to make fabric which is further uses to make different attires.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You identify the process as having nine stages and include several key features, such as planting in spring, harvesting in autumn, and the final use of the fabric for clothing. However, the account does not accurately report the order of the central stages: the strips are crushed into liquid pulp before filtering, and the fibres are softened after filtering. Your description reverses these steps and also suggests that strips are softened directly. The overview is present, but “complex stages” does not summarise the main transformation clearly. To strengthen the response, give a concise overview of the progression from growing bamboo to finished garments, then describe each stage in the diagram’s exact sequence, including weaving the yarn into fabric before clothing is made.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a recognisable overall structure: an introduction, an overview, and a chronological account beginning with planting and ending with clothing. Sequencing expressions such as “Firstly,” “Once,” and “After” help guide the reader. However, the progression becomes difficult to follow because the crushing, filtering, and softening stages are presented in the wrong order, and “After the completion of filter process” does not connect clearly to the preceding description of softened fibres. The overview also repeats the introduction rather than adding a distinct summary. Organise the body strictly in the diagram’s sequence and use clear links between each transformation, so cohesion supports rather than obscures the process.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant process vocabulary, including “harvest,” “strips,” “fibres,” “liquid pulp,” “yarn,” and “fabric,” which allows the reader to understand the general subject. There is also some attempt to vary wording with phrases such as “get ready” and “completion.” However, several choices are inaccurate or unnatural for this process: “formation of fabric through the bamboo,” “make soften fibres,” and “smooth yarn” do not describe the stages precisely. Spelling errors such as “cuting” and “diffrent” are noticeable, and “attires” is less natural here than “clothing” or “garments.” Aim for precise process collocations and check spelling, while retaining the useful technical terms you already use.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt a mixture of sentence forms, including a longer sequence beginning “Once the plants get ready” and a concluding sentence about the yarn and fabric. However, errors in verb forms and sentence construction are frequent enough to make some descriptions awkward. For example, “plants are being growed” should be “plants are grown,” while “the liquid pulp is then spin” needs “is then spun.” The phrase “shows that how a fabric is made” combines two incompatible structures; write “shows how fabric is made.” There are also agreement and article problems in “which includes” and “the filtering process.” Practise accurate passive forms, which are especially useful for describing manufacturing, and keep longer sentences grammatically controlled.
