IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Write at least 150 words.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The diagaram illustrates the process of bamboo fabric is made.
Overall, it is a liner process consisting of 9 main stages, starting with planting bamboo plants and ending with final product.
In the first stage, bamboo plant is planted in spring season. They harvest bamboo tree mostly in autumn period. Then, they cut the branches of bamboo tree into strips and send them in factories or in machine to crush the strips into liquid pulp. In next step, the mixture is filtred into seprate long fibres from liquid so that they can add water and amine oxide due ti which fibers get soften.
After that, next step is to spin the fiber to make yarn. Subsequently, they are sorted to make fabric weave and finally make a product ( shirt and socks) to transported to shops.
In conclusion whole process involves several steps from planting the tree to final product delivery.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You identify the process as having nine stages and give a clear overall direction, from planting bamboo to a finished product. The main stages are mostly covered, including harvesting, cutting, crushing, filtering, softening, spinning and weaving. However, some details are unclear or inaccurate: the diagram shows bamboo being cut into strips, not branches, and the final stage depicts clothing rather than delivery to shops. The description of weaving is also confusing in “they are sorted to make fabric weave,” and the conclusion introduces delivery, which is not shown. To strengthen the response, report the final clothing stage directly and describe each transformation precisely, while keeping the overview focused on the process’s start, end and main production phases.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a coherent overall arrangement: an introduction and overview are followed by the early processing stages and then the later stages. Sequencing expressions such as “In the first stage,” “Then,” “After that” and “Subsequently” help the reader follow the process, and the paragraphing is appropriate. This already gives the account a clear progression. Some links are less smooth or repetitive, however: “After that, next step” uses two sequencing signals together, while “In conclusion” repeats the overview rather than adding a useful final point. The reference in “they are sorted” is also unclear. Use transitions selectively and make the subject of each stage explicit to improve cohesion further.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant process vocabulary, including “harvest,” “strips,” “liquid pulp,” “fibres,” “spin” and “yarn,” which allows you to cover the main stages. There is some useful topic-specific language, but word choice and spelling are not consistently controlled. For example, “diagaram,” “filtred,” “seprate” and “fiber” show spelling or form problems, while “fabric weave” and “final product delivery” are awkward or imprecise for the diagram. “Bamboo tree” is also less suitable than “bamboo plant” or “bamboo stalk” in these contexts. Aim for accurate process collocations and check spelling carefully; precise vocabulary will make the stages easier to understand without relying on vague wording such as “product.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including a relative clause in “so that they can add water and amine oxide” and a participial phrase in “starting with planting bamboo plants.” The sequence is generally understandable, but grammatical errors occur in several sentences. For example, “the process of bamboo fabric is made” has an incorrect structure; “bamboo plant is planted” needs an article or plural form; and “to transported to shops” has an incorrect infinitive construction. There are also tense and agreement issues in “they are sorted to make fabric weave.” Practise describing processes with consistent present simple passive forms, such as “the strips are crushed” and “the fibres are softened,” and check articles and verb forms.
