IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Write at least 150 words.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The process diagram illustrates how the cloth is produced using bamboo plant.
Overall, the sequence is linear and contains total of nine steps. Starting from the bamboo plant being harvested which under go several stages and then produce fabric as the end product.
Firstly, bamboo plant is grown in the spring seasan whereas it is harvested in autum by farmers or assigned workers. After the bamboo is plucked it went through cutting stage in which it is cutted into strips using a sharp roller cutter. Then these logitudinal strips were crushed to extract the pulp, leaving the debris out from the other side of the machine. At the fifth stage, the pulp is filtered to eliminate any long fibre, to make sure the batter is ready to go for further process.
The filtered pulp is then mixed with water and amine oxide to soften the fibres. Futhermore after this stage there a thread like structure which is then spin to make a yarn. The yarn is then used to weave or make the fabric using different techniques, for instance, corchet. After going through weaving or sewing techniques their is a final product which is known as fabric.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You identify the process as a nine-step sequence and report its main stages, including seasonal planting and harvesting, crushing, filtering, softening, spinning and weaving. This gives a relevant account of how bamboo becomes fabric. However, some details are inaccurate or unclear: filtering separates long fibres from the liquid, rather than eliminating long fibres, and the diagram shows the final products as clothing items, not simply fabric. The overview also says harvesting starts the sequence, although planting is the first stage. The reference to debris leaving the machine and to crochet or sewing techniques is not supported by the diagram. To strengthen the response, give a more precise overview and describe the final clothing stage, while avoiding unsupported additions.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction and overview are followed by stages in sequence, with a paragraph break between the early and later processing. Sequencing expressions such as “Firstly,” “Then,” “At the fifth stage,” and “Furthermore” help the reader follow the process, and the progression is generally easy to understand. This meets the lower-band expectation of coherent organisation and shows some of the flexibility associated with stronger cohesion. However, a few links are awkward or unclear, particularly “After the bamboo is plucked it went through cutting stage” and “after this stage there a thread like structure.” The final sentence also shifts from fabric to a “final product” without clearly connecting this to the clothing shown. Use more precise references and transitions between stages.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use a relevant range of process vocabulary, including “harvested,” “crushed,” “pulp,” “filtered,” “fibres,” “spin,” and “weave,” so the reader can understand the general production sequence. There are also attempts at more specific language, such as “longitudinal strips” and “amine oxide.” However, several word choices or collocations are inaccurate: “plucked” is unsuitable for harvesting bamboo, “sharp roller cutter” is not shown, and “eliminate any long fibre” reverses the filtering step. Spelling errors such as “seasan,” “autum,” “logitudinal,” “Futhermore,” and “corchet” also reduce control. Choose precise terms from the diagram and check spelling; avoid adding technical details that are not provided.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a mix of simple and more complex sentences, including a contrast with “whereas” and a relative clause in “which is then spin to make a yarn.” The overall meaning is usually recoverable, but some grammatical errors remain across verb forms, agreement, articles and sentence construction. For example, “it went through cutting stage” shifts tense and omits an article; “there a thread like structure” is missing a verb; and “their is a final product” has an incorrect subject form. The opening also needs an article in “using bamboo plant,” while “the bamboo plant is grown” would be more natural. Aim to keep the process consistently in the present passive, and proofread each sentence for a complete verb phrase and correct agreement.
