IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Write at least 150 words.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
The diagram illustrates the process of manufacturing fabric from bamboo.
Overall, the process involves eight seqential stages, beginning with the cultivation of bamboo over a period from spring to autumn, including growing, harvesing, cutting, crushing of strips and ending with the transformation of yam into clothes.
In the first, growing the banboo plants by the farmers in the spring then the plants are harvested in the Autumn. in the third stage, the bamboo plants are cut into strips by a cutting machine.
Next, these strips are crushed to extract the lquid pulp from them. Through the process of fliteration separates long fibres from liquid then added water and oxide to converte it into soften fibres.
Finally, the softened fibres are spun to make yam. Now, these yam are used to make fabric and convert it into finish good such as clothes which is ready for sale in the market.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You identify the process as beginning with bamboo cultivation and ending with clothing, and you include several key stages, such as harvesting, cutting, crushing, filtering and spinning. However, the overview says there are eight stages, whereas the diagram shows nine, and the final stage—making garments—is not clearly distinguished from weaving fabric. Some details are also inaccurate or unclear: water and amine oxide are added to soften the fibres, not to convert them into fibres, and the diagram does not state that the finished goods are ready for sale. The response is one word below the required minimum, so it does not fully meet the task requirement. For a stronger response, report all nine stages accurately and make the overview more precise.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a clear overall sequence, supported by signposting such as “Overall,” “Next,” and “Finally.” The stages are generally presented in the order shown, and the paragraph break helps separate the overview from the process details. However, the middle section is difficult to follow in places: “Through the process of fliteration separates long fibres from liquid then added water…” does not clearly show which action follows another or who performs it. The final sentence also combines spinning, fabric production and clothing manufacture without clearly separating these steps. Use complete, clearly linked sentences and paragraph the stages into a more consistent progression to make the relationships between actions easier to follow.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant process vocabulary, including “cultivation,” “harvested,” “strips,” “pulp,” “fibres,” and “spun,” which helps communicate the main stages. However, spelling errors are noticeable, including “seqential,” “harvesing,” “banboo,” “lquid,” “fliteration,” and “yam.” Some word choices are also inaccurate or unnatural: “yam” should be “yarn,” “finish good” should be “finished goods” or “garments,” and “cutting machine” is less precise than “circular saw.” The range is sufficient to describe the process, but these errors reduce precision and polish. Check spelling carefully and choose terms that match the diagram and common manufacturing collocations.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple and more complex structures, including a passive construction in “the plants are harvested” and a sequence introduced by “beginning with.” However, grammatical control is inconsistent, and several sentences are incomplete or faulty. For example, “In the first, growing the bamboo plants by the farmers in the spring then the plants are harvested” lacks a clear main clause, while “Through the process of … separates … then added” has no properly formed subject and verb structure. There are also errors in agreement and sentence boundaries, such as “these yam are used” and the lowercase “in” after a full stop. Build each stage around a complete clause, and check verb forms, agreement, and punctuation.
