IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Write at least 150 words.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
The following flow chart illustrates the production process of bamboo fabric. The bamboo plants are planted in spring season followed by harvesting in Autumn season. After reaching to a certain stage, the bamboo trees are cut with electric cutter into strips and crushed in the crusher to obtain liquid pulp from them. The long fibres of strips are seperated from liquid as they get mixed during Crushing. From there onwards, two important componenets in softening of fibres that are water and amine oxide are added in the fibres to make them reach a certain level of softness. Those soften fibres are spinned and as a result are converted into yarn. Different roll balls of yarns are prepared here which are helpful in next procedures. At this step every single yarn is weaved to make a fabric from it. and ultimately after going through so many steps, we enjoy wearing different shirts, socks and other wearables made from bamboo trees.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You identify the process as the production of bamboo fabric and cover its broad progression from planting and harvesting through fibre treatment, yarn-making and fabric production. The seasonal details and the addition of water and amine oxide are accurately reported. However, some stages are unclear or misrepresented: the diagram shows bamboo being cut into strips and then crushed to make liquid pulp, while your account says the trees are cut with an electric cutter and that fibres are separated because they “get mixed during Crushing.” You also omit the final step in which the fabric is made into clothing, and there is no concise overview highlighting the process’s main phases. A clearer, more complete account of the sequence would strengthen the response.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response generally follows the process in sequence, using transitions such as “After,” “From there onwards,” and “ultimately,” so the reader can follow the broad movement from planting to finished products. However, the information is presented as one long paragraph, and several stages are crowded into lengthy sentences. Some links are also unclear: “From there onwards” does not specify which stage it refers to, while “At this step” could refer to either spinning or weaving. The final “and ultimately” begins a new sentence without appropriate capitalization. Organise the response into a brief introduction and a clearly ordered process paragraph, using precise stage references and transitions to make the progression easier to follow.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant process vocabulary, including “harvesting,” “liquid pulp,” “fibres,” “yarn,” and “fabric,” which helps communicate the stages. There is also some attempt at more specific language, such as “amine oxide” and “softening.” However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or awkward: “different roll balls of yarns” is unclear, “every single yarn is weaved” is not a natural description, and “wearables” is less suitable here than “clothing” or “garments.” Spelling errors such as “seperated” and “componenets” also reduce accuracy. Aim for precise, conventional process vocabulary and check spelling; for example, describe fibres being spun into yarn and the yarn being woven into fabric.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a mixture of sentence forms, including a sequence of linked clauses and a relative clause in “which are helpful in next procedures.” The overall meaning is usually recoverable, but errors in sentence construction and grammatical forms are noticeable. Examples include “After reaching to a certain stage,” where the subject of “reaching” is unclear, and “Those soften fibres are spinned,” which has problems with adjective form and the passive verb form. “At this step every single yarn is weaved to make a fabric from it. and ultimately…” also has faulty sentence punctuation and capitalization. Use clear subjects for each process stage, practise accurate passive forms such as “the fibres are spun,” and separate or punctuate sentences consistently.
