IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Write at least 150 words.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

The diagram illustrates the nine stages in which fabric is manufacture from bamboo tree.

Overall, Process include nine stages, starting from tree plantation. Then harvested and cut into strips from which soft fibres are sperated by filtration process and later these fibres softend and spined to yarn which converted into long string use for clothe production.

Firstly, In spring seasons , bamboo trees are planted. After time period, in autumn season these trees are harvested and cut in to small strips. Later on these strips are crushed to make liquid pulp. These strips have fibres in it which are extracted by filtration process and futher on these fibres are soften by adding water and mixture of amine oxide. After getting fibres, these are spined to make yam. This yarn is futher used in factories for manufacturing of fabrics which we wear.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You identify the process as having nine stages and include the seasonal planting and harvesting, followed by cutting, crushing, filtering, softening and spinning. This covers much of the sequence, but the account is incomplete: it does not clearly report the final weaving stage or the finished clothing shown in the diagram. The overview also says the fibres are softened and spun into yarn, but does not summarise the full progression from bamboo to fabric and clothing. Some details are imprecise, such as describing the yarn as a “long string.” The response is 141 words, below the required 150, so it needs a little more development. Include all final stages and make the overall transformation explicit.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable structure, with an overview followed by a chronological account, and sequencing words such as “Firstly,” “After,” and “Later on” help the reader follow the process. However, progression is weakened by the incomplete ending: the account moves from yarn to general factory production without clearly describing weaving and the clothing stage. Some links are also awkward or unclear, particularly “These strips have fibres in it which are extracted,” where the reference and relationship between the strips and fibres are difficult to follow. The overview and body repeat some information without adding much detail. Organise the stages into clearer groups and use precise references such as “the resulting pulp” and “these fibres.”

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant process vocabulary, including “harvested,” “crushed,” “liquid pulp,” “filtration,” and “amine oxide,” which shows an attempt to describe the diagram specifically. However, the range is limited and several word-choice, form, and spelling errors reduce precision: “fabric is manufacture,” “sperated,” “softend,” and “spined” are noticeable, while “yam” appears to be intended as “yarn.” Some phrases are also unnatural, such as “long string use for clothe production” and “these fibres are soften.” Choose accurate process terms and check spelling carefully. More precise wording, such as “the fibres are extracted” and “the yarn is woven into fabric,” would make the description clearer and more appropriate for an academic process report.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including a relative clause in “strips which are crushed to make liquid pulp” and a sequence of linked process steps. However, errors occur frequently enough to make some sentences difficult to read. For example, “Process include nine stages” has an agreement error, and “fabric is manufacture” uses an incorrect verb form. The sentence beginning “Overall” also lacks a clear grammatical structure, while “these fibres are soften” and “which converted into” omit or misuse necessary verb forms. Capitalisation and punctuation are inconsistent, as in “Firstly, In spring seasons ,”. Practise forming passive constructions consistently—“is planted,” “are harvested,” “is woven”—and check agreement, articles, and sentence boundaries.
