IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Write at least 150 words.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The diagram illustrates the process of fabric making using bamboo.

Overall, the fabic making method includes nine major steps starting with planting bamboo plants in the Spring season, and ends with making dresses utilizing the weaved fabric.

First of all, the bamboo fabric production commences by planting bamboo plants in the field during Spring. Then, the yields are harvested manually by using hand tools called sickle by farmers at Autumn season, and cut into strips by an automatic machine. The machine is used to cut the full bamboo into strips. After that, the cutting strips are crushed to make liquid pulp, which is then filtered for separating long fibres from liquid. The next step involved converting long fibres into soften fibres by adding water and amine oxide.

The soft fibres are then spinned to make yarn. The yarn is used to weave fabric, which are then used to make dresses such as t-shirt and socks.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response covers the main stages and gives a clear overview: production begins with spring planting and ends with clothing made from the fabric. It also accurately reports harvesting, cutting, crushing, filtering, softening, spinning and weaving, including the addition of water and amine oxide. However, some details are less precise or developed. The diagram shows bamboo being harvested in autumn, but “at Autumn season” is unclear, and “the yields” is not a precise description of the bamboo. The final stage is shown as finished clothing, including a T-shirt and socks; “dresses” is therefore too narrow and potentially misleading. To strengthen the report, describe the final products accurately and make the overview capture the progression from growing bamboo to finished garments.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response is arranged in a sensible sequence, with an overview followed by the production stages, and the reader can follow the process from planting to finished clothing. Linking phrases such as “First of all,” “Then,” “After that” and “The next step” help signal progression. However, the sequence markers are somewhat mechanical, and the long middle paragraph groups many stages together. Some references are also not fully clear: “The machine” follows the mention of cutting, but the repeated explanation that it cuts the full bamboo into strips adds little, while “which are then used” has an unclear plural reference. Grouping the stages into clearer sections and using more precise references would make the progression smoother and cohesion less repetitive.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

There is adequate vocabulary for describing a manufacturing process, including “crushed,” “liquid pulp,” “filtered,” “fibres,” “yarn” and “weave.” These terms help communicate the stages, and the writer attempts more specific language such as “automatic machine” and “hand tools.” Some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or awkward, however: “fabic” is misspelled, “the yields” is unsuitable for harvested bamboo, and “spinned” is not the correct form of “spin.” “Dresses” is also too specific for the diagram’s T-shirt and socks. Aim for precise process vocabulary and check spelling and word forms; this would improve accuracy while retaining the useful range already shown.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response uses both simple sentences and more complex forms, including a relative clause in “which is then filtered” and a passive construction in “are harvested.” Most stages remain understandable, but some grammatical errors persist. For example, “by using hand tools called sickle” needs a plural or article, and “at Autumn season” has an incorrect article and preposition pattern. There is also a tense mismatch in “The next step involved converting,” where the surrounding process description uses the present tense. In “The yarn is used to weave fabric, which are then used,” the relative clause has faulty agreement and an unclear antecedent. Review articles, agreement and consistent present-tense reporting to improve control.
