IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Write at least 150 words.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The processing diagram illustrates how fabric is being manufactured from bamboo sticks.

Overall, there are nine steps involve in the process starting from planting bamboos in spring season then harvesting in autumn season then filtration and addition of amine oxide for softness and in the end making t-shirts and socks from the bamboo fabric.

To begin with, in spring season the plantation of bamboo take place. Following this, the next is to harvest the bamboo sticks in autumn season. Bamboo stciks are then transfered andcut into pieces under a sharp zig-zag roller cutter. Then these strips are crushed to get liquid pulp then the liquid mixture is filtered in a cone shape container to remove any long fibres and impurities.

Following this, in the 6 step addition of water and a chemical called amine oxide is added into the mixture to enhance softness in fabric and make it soft.Fabric is shaped into a ball like structure and then fabric is weaved in a pillow shape. Finally, in the last step t-shirts and socks are made from the bamboo fabric. These clothes are environmental-friendly.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You cover the main stages from planting and autumn harvesting through processing, yarn-making, weaving and finished clothing, and your overview correctly identifies a nine-step process. Several details are also accurately reported, including crushing the strips into pulp and adding water and amine oxide to soften the fibres. However, some stages are less fully or precisely described: the diagram shows the fibres being spun into yarn before weaving, whereas “Fabric is shaped into a ball like structure” misidentifies the yarn stage. The claim that the clothes are “environmental-friendly” is not shown in the diagram. To strengthen the response, describe each transformation accurately and keep the summary focused on visible information.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction and overview are followed by stages in sequence, with “To begin with,” “Following this,” and “Finally” helping the reader track the process. This logical progression is a strength. The middle section, however, packs several operations into one long sentence, and the transition from softening to spinning and weaving is not clearly explained. Some linking phrases are repeated, and “in the 6 step” is an awkward reference that briefly interrupts the flow. For stronger cohesion, group the stages into clearer units and use precise references such as “the fibres” and “the resulting yarn” to show how each material changes.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use a reasonable range of process vocabulary, including “harvesting,” “liquid pulp,” “filtered,” and “amine oxide,” which helps explain the manufacturing stages. Some less common terms are attempted, but several choices are inaccurate or unnatural: “plantation” is not the clearest term for planting bamboo, “pillow shape” does not describe the woven fabric shown, and “environmental-friendly” is an unsupported description. Spelling slips such as “stciks” and “transfered,” along with the joined form “andcut,” also reduce accuracy. Aim for precise process terms and check spelling; for example, distinguish “spun into yarn” from “woven into fabric” rather than describing the yarn as fabric.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including sequencing clauses such as “Following this, the next is to harvest…” and a sentence explaining the purpose of filtering. The main meaning is generally understandable, but some grammatical errors remain. For example, “there are nine steps involve” needs a participle (“involved”), while “the plantation of bamboo take place” has an agreement error. Articles and sentence construction are also inconsistent in “in the 6 step addition of water… is added,” and punctuation is missing before “Fabric is shaped.” Work on subject–verb agreement, articles, and complete sentence boundaries, while retaining the useful variety of structures you already attempt.
