IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Write at least 150 words.

Student answer (Band 7.0)

The diagram illustrates the process by which the bamboo is converted into fabric.

Overall, the process consist of nine stages, beginning with the planting of bamboo in spring and ending with the production of clothing. The main stage involves harvesting the plants, processing them into fibers, and converting these fibres into fabric.

Initially, bamboo plants are grown in spring and then harvested in autum. After harvesting, the bamboo is cut into strips using machine. Next, these strips are crushed to produced liquid pulp. Following this, the pulp filtered to split-up long fibres from the liquid.

Once the fibres have been separated, water and amine oxide are added to them which makes them soften. After that, the soften fibres are spun to produce yarn. In the next stage, the yarn is woven to make fabric. Finally, the finished fabric is ready to use to produce clothing items, such as T-shirts and socks.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

You cover the full process and give a clear overview, identifying the nine stages and the progression from spring planting to clothing production. The main steps are reported in the correct order, including crushing the strips, filtering the pulp, softening the fibres with water and amine oxide, spinning yarn, and weaving fabric. The final reference to T-shirts and socks is also supported by the diagram. This is a strong, relevant account, although the overview’s phrase “the main stage” is vague: the process has several distinct stages, and no single stage is identified as dominant in the visual. A more precise overview could group the agricultural, fibre-processing, and textile-making phases.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.5

The response is organised effectively into an introduction, an overview, and two chronological paragraphs describing the stages. The sequence is easy to follow, and linking expressions such as “Initially,” “Following this,” “Once,” and “Finally” guide the reader through the process. The shift from the first three stages to the later processing stages is also clear. Cohesion is generally flexible and purposeful, though the repeated use of step-by-step transitions makes parts of the account feel somewhat formulaic. You could improve the flow by varying these links and using clearer references, for example, “The resulting pulp is then filtered” to connect the material directly to the next stage.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

You use an adequate range of process vocabulary, including “harvested,” “crushed,” “pulp,” “fibres,” “spun,” and “woven,” and these choices communicate the stages clearly. There is also some useful variation in “fabric” and “clothing items.” However, a few word-choice, collocation, and spelling issues limit precision: “using machine” lacks a natural article, “split-up” is not the appropriate expression here, and “autum” is misspelled. “The soften fibres” also uses the wrong word form. These slips do not prevent understanding, but more accurate collocations and careful proofreading would make the description more natural and precise.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including the overview clause “beginning with … and ending with …” and the time clause “Once the fibres have been separated.” Most relationships between stages are clear, and errors rarely obstruct meaning. Some grammatical errors remain, however: “the process consist” needs subject–verb agreement, “strips are crushed to produced” has an incorrect verb form, and “the pulp filtered” is missing an auxiliary. In “water and amine oxide are added to them which makes them soften,” the relative clause is awkwardly attached and the verb agreement is unclear. Review agreement, passive constructions, and infinitive forms, while retaining the useful range of sentence structures already attempted.
