IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Write at least 150 words.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The image shows which steps involves in the manufacturing process of fabric from bamboo.

Overall, the process shows nine steps to make bamboo fabric. It starts with the plantation of bamboo plants in spring season, carried out by other crucial steps and end with the fabric production after weave.

The manufacturing process of bamboo fabric starts with the bamboo pants plantation in spring season. Followed by the plantation, another important step is the harvestation in autumn season. Before crushing the strips to make liquid pulp, a wheel shaped steal cutter was used to cut these plants into strips. Then the fifth step is separation of long fibres from the liquid pulp by using filter.

The addition of water and amine oxide to soft the fibre is the most technical step of overal process. After this techmnical step, yarn was made by spinng. Before the production of bamboo fabric, the final step was Weave.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You identify the process as having nine stages and give a broad start-to-finish overview, from planting in spring to fabric production. Several central stages are also reported accurately, including autumn harvesting, cutting, crushing, filtering, softening with water and amine oxide, and spinning. However, the account does not fully cover the final sequence: it ends with weaving and omits the diagram’s last stage, which shows finished clothing items. Some details are also unclear, such as “carried out by other crucial steps,” and the overview could better summarise the transformation from bamboo to yarn, fabric, and clothing. Include every major stage and make the overall progression more explicit to develop the response more fully.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response is arranged in a generally logical order, with an opening, an overview, and a description of the stages. The sequence from planting through harvesting, cutting, crushing, filtering, softening, and spinning is mostly easy to follow. However, the final paragraph says “Before the production of bamboo fabric, the final step was Weave,” which makes the endpoint unclear and does not connect the process to the clothing shown in the diagram. Some linking is also mechanical or imprecise: “Followed by the plantation” and “Before crushing” do not clearly express the relationships between stages. Use consistent sequencing language and paragraph transitions, and ensure each reference points unambiguously to the next step.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant process vocabulary, including “harvest,” “strips,” “liquid pulp,” “fibres,” and “amine oxide,” which helps communicate the diagram’s technical stages. There are also attempts at more specific description, such as “wheel shaped” and “technical step.” However, several word choices and forms are inaccurate or unnatural: “plantation” is not the best term for planting bamboo, “harvestation” is not standard, and “soft the fibre” should use a suitable verb form. Spelling errors such as “steal,” “techmnical,” and “spinng” also reduce precision. Build a reliable set of process verbs and check spelling and collocations so the vocabulary remains clear and appropriately formal.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mixture of simple sentences and more complex structures, including “Before crushing the strips to make liquid pulp…” and “The addition of water and amine oxide…” The overall meaning is usually recoverable, but some grammatical errors remain. For example, “which steps involves” has a subject–verb agreement problem, while “It starts … carried out by other crucial steps and end” has an incomplete construction and inconsistent verb forms. “The addition … to soft the fibre” also uses an incorrect grammatical form, and “a wheel shaped … cutter was used” shifts to passive voice without a clear reason. Practise complete sentence structures, agreement, and consistent tense and voice; these changes would make the process description more controlled.
