IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Write at least 150 words.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
The given step-by-step processing diagrem illustrates about formation of fabric from bamboo.
Overall, there are saveral stages from which bamboo is converted to fabric. their first stage is that in spring bamboo is taken from bamboo plants and the lats stage is achive soften fibers.
Commonly, to plant bamboo in spring and achive bamboo from their trees and that bamboo is become harvested which is the second stage of the whole process. After harvested it is cut into strips by machine to converted to small pieces which is the third stage of the process.
Moreover, the strips is crushed to converted into liquid pulp which is the fourth stage of the process and after this, the liquid pulp is filtered to separate long fiber from liquid, and in last stage, water and amine oxide is added to clean liquid to achive soften fibers.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0
You identify the topic and describe several early and middle stages, including planting, harvesting, cutting, crushing, filtering and softening. However, the account is incomplete: it stops after softening the fibres and omits spinning them into yarn, weaving the fabric and producing clothing. The overview is also inaccurate: you call softening the final stage, although it is followed by three stages, and say bamboo is taken from plants in spring rather than planted then and harvested in autumn. The response therefore addresses the process only partially, with important features missing or misreported. It is also 7 words below the required minimum. Include all stages and give an accurate overview of the process from planting to finished garments.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a basic paragraph structure, moving from an introduction and overview to descriptions of the process, and sequence markers such as “Overall,” “Moreover” and “after this” help show order. However, progression is weakened by repetition: planting and harvesting are described more than once, and “the third stage of the process” and “the fourth stage of the process” repeat information without adding much. Some links are unclear or mechanically phrased, particularly “Commonly, to plant bamboo in spring and achive bamboo from their trees.” Organise the body in clear chronological groups and use concise links such as “Next,” “Following this” and “Finally.” A complete sequence would also make the progression easier to follow.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use some relevant process vocabulary, including “harvested,” “strips,” “liquid pulp,” “filtered” and “amine oxide,” so the reader can recognise the subject and several stages. However, the range is limited and some word choices or collocations are inaccurate, such as “formation of fabric,” “achive bamboo” and “clean liquid to achive soften fibers.” There are also noticeable spelling errors, including “diagrem,” “saveral,” “lats” and “achive,” which reduce precision. Use more exact process verbs and nouns, and check spelling carefully. For example, describe bamboo as being “cultivated,” fibres as being “softened,” and the final material as “woven into fabric,” rather than relying on repeated forms of “achive” and “converted.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple statements and longer sentences linked with “which,” “after” and “and,” but control is inconsistent. Errors in agreement and verb forms occur in phrases such as “the strips is crushed,” “water and amine oxide is added,” and “that bamboo is become harvested.” The overview also has an unclear sentence structure: “their first stage is that in spring bamboo is taken from bamboo plants.” Articles and sentence boundaries need attention as well. These errors sometimes make the process difficult to interpret, although the intended sequence is often recoverable. Practise accurate passive forms for process descriptions—for example, “the strips are crushed” and “the fibres are softened”—and build longer sentences from correctly formed clauses.
