IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Write at least 150 words.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
The given diagram illustrates the process of formation of fabric by using bamboo.
Overall, the process consists of 9 stages. It begins with bamoos plantation and ends with different new cloths.
Initially, the bamboo are planted in the season of spring, and it cuts down in the autumn. The third step is of making small strips by cutting in tiny pieces. Next step is to extract liquid pulp from strips, then this pulp filter out to remove long fibers.
Afterthat, water and amine oxide is added into the long fibers, which helps them to become soft, then these fibers are spinned for making yarm. The second last step is to making fabric by weae the yarm. Finally different varieties of cloths are made by this fabric

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You identify the process as having nine stages and give a clear overall direction, from planting bamboo to producing clothing. Several key details are accurately reported, including the spring planting, autumn harvest, addition of water and amine oxide, and the final weaving stage. However, some stages are unclear or inaccurately described: the bamboo is cut into strips, not “tiny pieces,” and the liquid pulp is filtered to separate long fibres before those fibres are softened. The overview could also better summarise the transformation from raw bamboo into yarn, fabric and clothing. The response is 24 words below the required minimum, which limits the detail available. Develop the stages more fully and describe the final clothing items shown in the diagram.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response follows the process in the correct general order and uses a basic paragraph structure: an introduction, an overview and a chronological account. Sequencing expressions such as “Initially,” “Next,” “Afterthat” and “Finally” help the reader follow the stages. However, the progression is sometimes difficult to track because the relationship between steps is compressed—for example, “then this pulp filter out” does not clearly distinguish filtering from softening. The overview and body also repeat the start and end points without adding much organisation. Use separate, clearly developed paragraphs for the overview and process details, and connect each stage with accurate references such as “the resulting pulp” and “the separated fibres.”
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use some relevant process vocabulary, including “plantation,” “extract,” “liquid pulp,” “fibers,” “spinned” and “weae.” Terms such as “amine oxide” and “yarm” also show an attempt to report the diagram’s specific labels. However, the range is limited and several spelling or word-choice errors make parts less clear, notably “bamoos,” “yarm,” “weae” and “cloths.” Some phrases are also unnatural, such as “process of formation of fabric” and “different new cloths.” Choose precise process terms and check spelling carefully; for example, use “manufacture” or “production,” “yarn,” “weave,” and “garments.” This would make the description more accurate and easier to understand.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple and more extended sentence forms, including a relative clause in “which helps them to become soft,” and the sequence is generally understandable. However, errors in verb forms, agreement and sentence construction are frequent enough to affect clarity. For example, “the bamboo are planted … and it cuts down” shifts incorrectly between plural and singular subjects and uses an unsuitable verb form; “this pulp filter out” is missing an auxiliary or passive verb; and “the second last step is to making” has an incorrect infinitive pattern. There are also article and number problems in “water and amine oxide is added.” Practise accurate passive constructions for process descriptions, such as “the bamboo is harvested” and “the fibres are softened.”
