IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Write at least 150 words.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

The diagram illustrates the process of producing bamboo fabric from the initial planting of bamboo to the final manufacturing stages

Overall of production of bamboo fabric involves several stages beginning with the seasons of the world most of the bamboo fabric harvesting happens in CHINA owing to the fact that worlds large amount of pandas are in CHINA.

Initially bamboo plants are planted in spring and left to grow until autumn when they are harvested. The harvested bamboo is then cut into smaller strips using machinery. Subsequently these strips are crushed to produce a liquid pulp which is passed through a filtering system to separate the long fibers from the remaining liquid.

Following this, the extracted fibers are softened by adding water and amine oxide. Then they put the softened fibers into a spin which then makes a yarn. Once the fibers are are somewhat hardened the are made into a weave fabric.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

You cover the main sequence from planting in spring through harvesting, processing the fibres, and making yarn and fabric. However, the overview introduces unsupported information: the diagram says nothing about China, pandas, or where most harvesting occurs, so this distracts from the process itself. The final stage is also not fully reported: step 9 shows finished clothing items, but your account stops at woven fabric. Some details are imprecise, such as saying the bamboo is cut “using machinery” rather than identifying the strips, and the description of the final stages is unclear. To strengthen the response, give a concise overview of the full process and report only features shown in the diagram.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a generally understandable order: the first paragraph introduces the process, and the following paragraphs move from planting and harvesting to fibre treatment. Sequencing words such as “Initially,” “Subsequently,” and “Following this” help the reader follow the stages. However, the overview is disrupted by the unrelated China-and-pandas claim, and the final paragraph does not clearly distinguish spinning, weaving, and the production of clothing. The response would be easier to follow if each stage were linked precisely and the overview summarised the complete process. Use paragraphing to separate the overview from the detailed sequence, and ensure each linking phrase signals a clear relationship between the steps.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use several relevant process terms, including “harvested,” “crushed,” “liquid pulp,” “filtering system,” and “softened,” which help describe the diagram. There is some variety in how you refer to the material and its stages. However, a few choices are inaccurate or awkward: “put the softened fibers into a spin” does not naturally describe the process, and “made into a weave fabric” is not the appropriate expression. “The seasons of the world” is also unclear and does not convey a relevant feature. Aim for precise process collocations and avoid adding vocabulary that suggests information absent from the diagram. Consistent spelling of “fibres” or “fibers” would also improve presentation.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mixture of simple and more complex sentences, including the time clause “when they are harvested” and the relative clause “which is passed through a filtering system.” These structures generally communicate the sequence. However, errors recur, particularly in the final paragraph: “Then they put the softened fibers into a spin” has an unclear subject and construction, while “the fibers are are somewhat hardened the are made” contains repetition and missing grammatical links. The opening overview also lacks a clear grammatical structure (“Overall of production…”). Review sentence boundaries, subject–verb relationships, and articles, and proofread carefully for repeated or omitted words. More controlled complex sentences would make the process easier to understand.
