IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Write at least 150 words.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The process depicts the manufacturing of fabric from bamboo.
Overall, this is a 9 stages process involving different stages in it from planting the bamboos, harvesting and then cutting them, filteration, making liquid pulp, process to make the yam and final products after the process of weaving.
In Spring, the bamboo plants are planted which are then harvested in Autumn. These bamboos are cut down into strips with the help of cutter.Liquid pulp is obtain by griding and breaking the strips. To seprate the long fibres present in the liquid pulp we obtained, Filteration is done.
After filteration, these fibres go through a chemcial process in which water and amine oxide is adeed to the fibres. This chemcial process makes the fiber soft and easy to use.Soft fibres are then spinned to obtain the balls of yam.Balls are then weaved to make the fabric which is going to make the products. These fabric are then used to make the user products: socks and shirts.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You cover the main stages from planting and seasonal harvesting through processing, spinning, weaving and the finished clothing. The overview identifies the process as having nine stages and gives a useful broad summary, while the body follows the sequence and includes the water and amine oxide used to soften fibres. The final products are also correctly identified as socks and shirts. Some details are less fully or precisely reported: the diagram says the bamboo is cut into strips, but does not specify a cutter, and the overview’s sequence is muddled when it places filtering before making liquid pulp. The description of the final stage could also state more directly that the fabric is made into clothing. A clearer overview of the main phases and more exact stage relationships would strengthen the response.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response is arranged in a clear introduction, overview and two body paragraphs, and the stages generally progress from cultivation to finished products. Sequencing expressions such as “In Spring,” “After filteration” and “then” help the reader follow the process. However, cohesion is not always smooth: the overview lists “filteration” before “making liquid pulp,” which conflicts with the actual sequence, and “these fibres” and “these fabric” do not always make the references easy to follow. The long final sentence also compresses several stages and outcomes together. Use a more consistent set of stage links, and give each major phase a clear sentence so that the progression is both logical and easy to track.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant process vocabulary, including “harvested,” “strips,” “liquid pulp,” “fibres,” “amine oxide” and “weaved,” so the reader can understand the subject. There is some attempt at more specific language, particularly in describing the chemical treatment and the separation of fibres. However, spelling and word-choice errors are noticeable, including “filteration,” “griding,” “seprate,” “chemcial,” “adeed” and “yam.” Some expressions are also imprecise or unnatural, such as “user products” and “balls of yam.” These errors reduce the accuracy and polish of the description, even though the main meaning is usually recoverable. Check spelling carefully and choose standard process terms such as “filtration,” “grinding,” “yarn” and “finished garments.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You use both simple statements and some longer structures, for example, “In Spring, the bamboo plants are planted which are then harvested in Autumn,” and the sentence explaining how fibres are separated from the pulp. This gives the response some structural variety, and the overall meaning remains understandable. However, several grammatical errors recur. The opening overview has an awkward construction (“a 9 stages process”), and there are agreement and article problems in “These fabric are then used” and “the fiber soft.” Passive forms are appropriate for this process, but they are not consistently controlled: “Liquid pulp is obtain” and “fibres … is adeed” need correct verb forms and agreement. Review plural agreement, articles and passive verb forms, and punctuate sentence boundaries consistently.
