IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Write at least 150 words.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
The following diagram illustrates the manufacturing of fabric from the bamboo.
The bamboo plants usually grow up in the spring season. The farmers then harvest them and sell it to the individuals or certain businesses such as factories. These bamboos are cut into thin strips by the rolling blade in the factories then these thin strips are being continuously crushed in order to produce the liquid pulp. Afterwards, a filter is responsible in separating the long fibers from liquid. To soften these long fibers, a mixture of water and the chemical called amine oxide is used.
After these long fibers are successfully soften, then they would be spin by the individuals or certain equipment in order to make yarn. These yarns are then sell in the markets or clothing businesses. These clothing franchises buy them in order to sell these yarns at higher prices after weaving them into the clothes.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
You describe several central stages in the correct order, including harvesting, cutting, crushing, filtering, softening, spinning and weaving. However, the account only partially fulfils the task because it adds unsupported commercial steps: the diagram does not say that farmers sell bamboo to factories, that yarn is sold in markets, or that clothing businesses buy it and resell it at higher prices. The final stage is also misrepresented: the diagram shows finished clothing items, rather than yarn being sold after weaving. There is no clear overview identifying the process as a sequence from planting to finished garments, and the seasonal details (spring planting and autumn harvesting) are not both reported. Focus on what the diagram shows and summarise its overall progression before describing the stages.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response is arranged in two paragraphs, and the sequence is generally easy to follow: the first paragraph covers the early processing stages, while the second moves from softened fibres towards fabric. Linking expressions such as “Afterwards” and “After” help signal progression. However, the organisation does not fully reflect the diagram’s complete process, as the final clothing stage is replaced by an invented account of sales. Some connections are also mechanical or unclear, particularly “After these long fibers are successfully soften, then…”. A clearer overview followed by a systematic account of the stages would strengthen progression. Use references such as “the resulting yarn” and “the finished fabric” to make links between stages more precise.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use a reasonably varied set of process vocabulary, including “harvest,” “crushed,” “liquid pulp,” “filter,” “fibers,” and “weaving,” so the main production stages are usually understandable. There are also attempts at more specific language, such as “amine oxide.” However, some choices are inaccurate or unnatural for this diagram: “rolling blade” is not the tool shown, “sell it to the individuals” introduces unsupported information, and “clothing franchises” is not an appropriate description of the final stage. “Grow up” is also less natural than “grow.” Aim for precise process terms and avoid adding commercial vocabulary that the visual does not support. Consistent spelling, such as “fibres,” would also improve presentation.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentences, including a sequence of clauses linked with “then” and an infinitive of purpose in “in order to produce the liquid pulp.” The overall meaning is usually recoverable, but some errors in verb forms and agreement remain. For example, “these long fibers are successfully soften” should use a past participle (“are softened”), while “they would be spin” needs “spun.” In “These yarns are then sell,” the passive form should be “are then sold.” There are also agreement and reference problems in “harvest them and sell it,” where the pronoun should match the plural bamboo plants. Practise accurate passive constructions, which are especially useful for describing manufacturing processes.
