IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Write at least 150 words.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

The diagram illustrates the process for which the bamboo undergoes for the production of fabric.

Overall the process consists of 8 distinct stages, beginning with planting bamboo plants and culminating in weaving of yarn to make fabric.

Initially bamboo plants are planted in spring and are harvested in autumn. After the harvestation, bamboos are cut into strips by a blade which spins in high speed. Furthermore, bamboo strips are then crushed to make the liquid pulp and the excess leaves on the bamboo strips are removed. Filteration of the liquid pulp is done to seperate fibres from the liquid. Water and amine oxide is added to the residue fibres to make it soften for the further stage.

These long fibres are then spinned to make a yarn. Ultimately, yarns are weaved to make the fabric and at this stage fabric made which is than used to make garments and socks.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You cover the main stages from planting through processing to the finished products, and the seasonal details are accurate. The overview identifies the start and later production stages, while the body gives a generally clear account of the sequence. This meets the task well, with some features already showing the fuller coverage expected at a higher level. However, the overview says there are eight stages, although the diagram numbers nine, and it describes the endpoint as weaving fabric rather than the final clothing items. The claim that excess leaves are removed is not shown, and the explanation of filtering could be more precise. Correct these details and make the overview capture both the fibre-to-fabric process and its final products more completely.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The response is organised into an introduction, an overview and two body paragraphs, and the stages are mostly presented in a logical order. Sequencing expressions such as “Initially,” “After the harvestation,” “Furthermore” and “Ultimately” help guide the reader through the process. The final paragraph also moves naturally from spinning to weaving and the products. Cohesion is generally clear, though some links are mechanical or do not express the relationship precisely: “Furthermore” adds little to the sequence, and “at this stage” is vague when introducing the garments and socks. The overview’s reference to eight stages also conflicts with the later account. Use more exact sequencing and references, and ensure the overview agrees with the details that follow.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use a suitable range of process vocabulary, including “harvested,” “crushed,” “liquid pulp,” “fibres,” “residue” and “garments.” These choices communicate the general manufacturing sequence, and some less common terms are attempted. However, several word choices or forms are inaccurate or unnatural, such as “harvestation,” “Filteration,” “spinned” and “weaved.” “Blade which spins in high speed” is also an awkward description of the circular saw, while “excess leaves” introduces an unsupported detail. Spelling errors such as “seperate” and “than” reduce accuracy. Aim for standard process terms and check spelling and collocations; this will make the account more precise without requiring a more elaborate vocabulary.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

There is a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including the opening description and the sequence of clauses beginning “After the harvestation” and “These long fibres.” Most of the process remains understandable, and the response attempts passive constructions appropriate to a manufacturing diagram. Some grammatical errors persist, however. “The process for which the bamboo undergoes” has an incorrect clause structure; “Water and amine oxide is added” has subject–verb disagreement; and “to make it soften” is not a well-formed purpose construction. The final sentence also lacks a clear verb in “at this stage fabric made” and uses an incorrect relative time form in “than used.” Practise accurate passive forms, agreement and complete clauses while retaining the sentence variety you already attempt.
