IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Write at least 150 words.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
The diagram below illustrates how bamboo fabric is made after multiple steps.
Overall, it is evident that the bamboos are used to make fabric and this process consist on nine different stages. In this process, there are many steps to follow in which both mannual and automatic tasks using machines included. Final product is weave to make fabric later use to make cloths. The process starts from planting, harvesting to crushing and then adding chemicals to get spin, weave and then final outcomes.
Initially, bamboo plants harvested in spring season and than in autumn season bamboo is ready for cutting. The harvesting process completed through labor using mannual sharp cutting tools. However, in next steps the whole stick of bamboo inserted into a curshing machine. The machine cut bamboo into strips that later used for crushing strips process in which machine help to make liquid pulp from solid bamboo strips. In fifth step, this pulp cleaning process started where liquid added into filter that help to separate long fibres from liquid. The next stage is soften fibers process, where water and amine oxide mixed in to completely filtered liquid of bamboos.
After mixing chemicals, spin in ready product that used to get yarn and then converted into weave using to make fabric. Finally, using weave the final results achieved.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You cover the main stages from growing and harvesting bamboo through processing fibres and producing fabric, and your overview identifies a nine-stage process. However, some details are inaccurate or unclear: bamboo is planted in spring and harvested in autumn, but you reverse this by saying it is harvested in spring. You also say the bamboo is inserted into a crushing machine that cuts it into strips, whereas cutting and crushing are separate stages. The final clothing items are shown after weaving, but your account does not clearly describe this last stage. To strengthen the response, report the sequence precisely and distinguish the filtering, softening, spinning, weaving and finished-product stages.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction and overview are followed by stages in process order, with a paragraph break before the later steps. Sequencing expressions such as “Initially,” “In fifth step,” “The next stage” and “Finally” help the reader follow the process. However, progression is sometimes weakened by unclear references and links. For example, “After mixing chemicals, spin in ready product” does not clearly connect the softened fibres to yarn, and “using weave the final results achieved” leaves the final stage vague. Some transitions also make the sequence harder to follow because cutting and crushing are conflated. Use clear stage-to-stage links and refer explicitly to each material as it changes.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant process vocabulary, including “harvesting,” “strips,” “liquid pulp,” “filter,” “fibres,” “yarn” and “fabric,” which gives the response an adequate range for describing the diagram. Some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or imprecise, however: “the bamboos” is unnatural for the material, “mannual sharp cutting tools” is awkward, and “spin in ready product” does not convey the intended transformation clearly. There are also spelling errors such as “curshing,” “mannual” and “cloths.” Aim for precise process verbs and standard forms, for example “crush the strips,” “separate fibres from the liquid,” and “spin the fibres into yarn.” This would make the stages easier to understand.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including a relative clause in “steps to follow in which…” and a clause beginning “where water and amine oxide…”. However, grammatical control is uneven, and errors sometimes make relationships between stages difficult to understand. Examples include “this process consist on nine different stages,” “bamboo plants harvested,” and “water and amine oxide mixed,” where verb forms or agreement are missing or incorrect. The sentence “After mixing chemicals, spin in ready product…” also lacks a clear grammatical subject and verb structure. Practise forming passive process descriptions consistently, such as “The bamboo is harvested” and “The fibres are softened by adding water and amine oxide,” while checking articles, tense and subject–verb agreement.
