IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Write at least 150 words.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
The figure discribes fabric is produced by use of bamboo. From a broad prospectivite, it looks like a very simple procedure by just planting bamboo and get textiles at the end, but in reality it's. The whole process is a mixture of total 9 steps which are involved in its whole preparation.
The whole procedure begins by cultivating bamboo plants in a suitable weather which is spring. Bamboo takes about 6 to 7 months for maturing as it gives its crop for harvesting in autumn. Third step is involved is making stripes by cutting it. Fourth step is to make liquid pulp by crushing the stripes which is further followed by filtering the pulp. In this way, fibers and liquid are distingusihed. Separated fibers are soften by addition of water and amine oxide. And in upcoming step, fibers are spin to make a roll of fibers which is called as yarn. And yarn is used in weaving fabric. And in last fabric is used inmaking clothes.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You cover the main sequence from planting through to making clothing, and correctly include the seasonal timing and the key processing stages, such as crushing, filtering and softening the fibres. However, the overview is not clearly stated: the opening calls the process “very simple,” but does not summarise its broad progression from growing and harvesting bamboo to producing fabric and garments. Some details are unclear or unsupported by the diagram, particularly the claim that bamboo takes “about 6 to 7 months” to mature. The final stages are reported, but the description could be more precise about spinning fibres into yarn and weaving that yarn into fabric. A clearer overview and closer attention to the diagram’s labels would make the account more complete.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The stages are presented in the correct general order, and sequencing expressions such as “Third step,” “Fourth step,” and “In upcoming step” help the reader follow the process. The response also moves from cultivation to processing and then to the finished products. However, it is written as one paragraph, so the overview and detailed stages are not clearly separated. Several links are repetitive or mechanical, especially the repeated use of “And” to begin sentences, while “In this way” does not clearly identify what is being explained. Grouping the stages into a brief overview and a logically organised process description, and varying the transitions, would improve the flow and make relationships between steps clearer.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant process vocabulary, including “cultivating,” “harvesting,” “crushing,” “filtering,” “fibers,” and “weaving,” which allows the reader to understand the main stages. There are also attempts at more specific terms, such as “liquid pulp” and “amine oxide.” However, several spelling and word-choice errors reduce precision: “discribes,” “prospectivite,” “stripes” for bamboo strips, and “distingusihed” are noticeable. Some phrases are also unnatural, including “a suitable weather” and “a roll of fibers.” Use the diagram’s terminology consistently and check spelling and collocations. More accurate choices such as “strips,” “separated,” and “yarn” would make the description clearer and more natural.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response attempts both simple and more complex sentences, including a relative clause in “which is further followed by filtering the pulp” and a passive construction in “fibers are soften.” However, control is inconsistent, and several sentence structures are faulty or incomplete. The opening ends with the fragment “but in reality it’s,” while “The whole procedure begins by cultivating bamboo plants in a suitable weather which is spring” has problems with article use and clause construction. Verb forms are also inaccurate in “fibers are soften” and “fibers are spin,” and the repeated sentence openings with “And” weaken punctuation and sentence control. Aim for complete sentences and check passive forms, for example, “the fibres are softened” and “the fibres are spun.”
