IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Write at least 150 words.

Student answer (Band 5.0)

The diagram illustrates how clothes are made from using bamboo.

Overall, it is clear that this process undergoes through nine steps to produce wearable clothes.

Initially, process starts by planting a bamboo in spring. The bamboo plant will be harvested in autumn and the harvested plants will be cut down into small strips whereas to make a liquid pulp these strips will be crushed.

Turning to filteration process, the long fibres from the liquid will be divided. To sofetn the fibres the water and amine oxide is added.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0

You identify the process as producing clothing and correctly report several early stages: planting in spring, harvesting in autumn, cutting the bamboo, crushing it into pulp, filtering the fibres, and adding water and amine oxide to soften them. However, the response addresses the diagram only minimally: it stops after stage six and omits spinning the fibres into yarn, weaving the fabric, and making the finished garments. The overview says there are nine steps, but the stages are not all described, and the overview does not summarise the full transformation from plant to clothing. The response is also 63 words below the required minimum. To improve, cover every stage and include a concise overview of the complete process.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a basic, understandable sequence: an introduction and overview are followed by descriptions of the planting, harvesting, cutting, crushing, filtering, and softening stages. Time markers such as “Initially” and “in autumn” help the reader follow the early steps, while “Turning to” signals a shift to the next part. However, the account ends abruptly and does not organise the later stages, so progression through the whole process is incomplete. Some linking is also awkward: “whereas” does not clearly express the relationship between crushing and producing pulp. Develop the response in a complete sequence, using clear links such as “Next,” “After this,” and “Finally,” and group related stages into paragraphs.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use some relevant process vocabulary, including “harvested,” “strips,” “liquid pulp,” and “long fibres,” which helps communicate the early stages. There is also an attempt to vary wording with “Turning to.” However, the range is limited because the response covers only part of the process, and several choices are inaccurate or unnatural: “clothes are made from using bamboo” is awkward, “filteration” is misspelled, and “sofetn” is also misspelled. “Divided” is less precise than language describing separation of fibres from liquid. Use accurate process terms consistently, and include vocabulary for the missing stages, such as spinning yarn, weaving fabric, and producing garments.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response includes both simple statements and some attempts at more complex structures, such as “whereas to make a liquid pulp these strips will be crushed.” The main stages are generally understandable, but grammatical control is uneven. Examples include “this process undergoes through nine steps,” where the verb pattern is incorrect, and “process starts” and “To soften the fibres the water and amine oxide is added,” which have article or agreement problems. The sentence beginning “Initially” also runs several stages together, making the structure difficult to manage; there is additionally no space after the full stop in “spring.The.” Aim for clear, complete sentences, check subject–verb agreement and articles, and use passive forms accurately when describing the process.
