IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Write at least 150 words.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

The process illustrates the sequential stages involved in the production of fabric from bamboo.

Althing's considered, the manufacturing cycle transition from bamboo plants to industrial process until the final product will produced.

Firstly, the bamboo plant grew up in spring season its stage stage of making bamboo fabric, than harvesting season in the autumn after harvest the crop of bamboo plants, than move forward to cutting the crops in strips. At 4th stage cut strips will gone into the process of crushing at there the trips turned into liquid pulp after gaining the liquid pulp they goes to stage of filtering at there the long fibers from liquid separated. Moreover, the filtered fibers passed through the stage where some water and chemical called amine oxide add in for soften the fibers after soften the fibers they moved in the form of thread at this step gained thread rolled in in spin form. Furthermore, spin is used to make yarn after making yarn its becomes in the form of weave to make fabric. Although, after from all the stages said above it is in the form where they directly used to make the clothes (shirts, sweaters, socks and many more).

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You identify the process as a sequence from bamboo plants to fabric and describe most of its main stages, including seasonal planting and harvesting, cutting, crushing, filtering, softening, spinning and weaving. This gives the reader a generally relevant account. However, some details are unclear or inaccurate: the diagram shows the final stage as clothing, but it does not specify sweaters or other products beyond a T-shirt and socks. The overview also refers vaguely to an “industrial process” rather than clearly summarising the transformation from plant to finished clothing. To strengthen the response, state the overall progression clearly and report each stage precisely, without adding unsupported examples or confusing the order of yarn, spinning and weaving.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response follows the process broadly in sequence, and transitions such as “Firstly,” “Moreover,” and “Furthermore” help signal movement between stages. However, most of the description is packed into one long paragraph, so the stages are difficult to distinguish. Several linking expressions are awkward or repetitive, and the sentence beginning “At 4th stage” runs through crushing, filtering and softening without clear boundaries. Some references, such as “they” and “at there,” also make it less clear which material or stage is being discussed. Use a separate overview and a logically grouped process description, with shorter sentences and clear links between each stage. This would make the progression easier to follow and reduce the mechanical feel of the connectors.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant process vocabulary, including “harvesting,” “crushing,” “liquid pulp,” “filtering,” “fibers,” “yarn” and “fabric,” which allows you to cover the main stages. There are also attempts at more specific wording, such as “amine oxide.” However, several choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, including “Althing’s considered,” “the manufacturing cycle transition,” “the trips turned into liquid pulp,” and “in spin form.” These sometimes make the intended meaning harder to understand. Aim for precise process verbs and natural combinations, for example, “the strips are crushed to form pulp” and “the fibres are spun into yarn.” Check spelling and word forms, and avoid adding product names not shown in the diagram.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response attempts to combine stages using longer sentences and sequencing clauses, but these structures are often faulty, and there are frequent errors in verb forms, agreement, articles and sentence boundaries. For example, “the bamboo plant grew up in spring season” and “the final product will produced” have incorrect tense or verb construction; “the long fibers from liquid separated” is missing a correctly formed verb phrase. The long sentence beginning “Firstly” also contains several clauses joined without reliable punctuation, which makes the relationships between ideas difficult to follow. Use the present simple passive consistently for a process, such as “The bamboo is harvested” and “The strips are crushed,” and practise building one clear sentence for each stage before combining ideas.
