IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Write at least 150 words.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The process given below in the diagram depicts how fabric is manufcatured from bamboo.
Overall, the diagram shows the process of how the fabric is made, starting with planting bamboo plants in the month of spring which are ready to be harvested in the month of autumn. Later the planyts go through various processes that makes it suitable to weave them into the fabric cloth eventually reaching the market.
The process includes the harvested plants being retrieved and cut into strips via a circular-like blade. These strips are later crushed into liquid-like pulp that goes through a filteration process where the long fibres mixed in the pulp is seperated from the liquid. Water and amine oxide is added to soften the fibres and eventually its spinned into a yarn. This yarn is weaved carefully to make the fabric that is later on used to make the cloth.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You cover the main stages from seasonal planting and harvesting through processing, spinning and weaving, and your overview gives the reader a clear sense of the process. Several details are accurately reported, including cutting the bamboo, filtering out long fibres, and adding water and amine oxide. However, the final stage is described as making “the cloth,” whereas the diagram shows finished clothing items; the claim that these products reach “the market” is not shown. Some stages could also be more precisely explained, particularly that crushing produces liquid pulp. The response is 147 words, three words below the required minimum. Add a little more accurate detail about the final products and the sequence to complete the task more fully.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response is arranged in a sensible order: an introduction, an overview, and then a description of the processing stages. Sequencing expressions such as “Overall,” “Later,” and “eventually” help the reader follow the process, and the stages are generally presented in the correct order. Cohesion is sometimes less clear because several steps are compressed into long sentences, especially the sentence beginning “These strips are later crushed,” which moves through crushing, filtering and softening at once. The reference in “weave them into the fabric cloth” is also unclear, as “them” could refer to the plants or the fibres. Use separate sentences for key stages and refer explicitly to “the fibres” or “the yarn” to make progression and referencing clearer.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of process vocabulary, including “harvested,” “strips,” “pulp,” “filteration process,” “fibres,” “spinned,” and “yarn.” These choices show an attempt to describe the manufacturing stages precisely, and the meaning is generally understandable. However, some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or awkward: “circular-like blade” is less precise than “circular saw,” “liquid-like pulp” is unnecessary, and “fabric cloth” is redundant. There are also spelling or word-form errors, including “manufcatured,” “planyts,” “seperated,” and “spinned.” Aim for accurate technical terms and check spelling and collocation; this will make the description more natural and precise.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You use both simple and complex sentence forms, including a relative clause in “the long fibres mixed in the pulp” and a sequence of clauses describing how the material is processed. Most of the process remains understandable, but some grammatical errors affect accuracy. In “the long fibres … is seperated,” the plural subject requires “are separated”; “Water and amine oxide is added” should take “are added,” and “its spinned” needs a clear subject and passive form, such as “the fibres are spun.” The overview’s “process … that makes it suitable” also has an unclear singular reference. Review subject–verb agreement, passive constructions and pronoun reference, while retaining your attempts at complex sentences.
