IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Write at least 150 words.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The diagram illustrates the manufacturing of bamboo fabric from the bamboo trees.

Overall, there are nine steps in which the bamboo is being manufactured. Its a long process that takes months to make it.

Initially around spring the bamboo plants are planted which is then harvested in autumn. The harvested bamboo plants are then cut into strips using a bladed machine. Following that the strips are crushed to extract the liquid pulp which is then filtered. Filtering this liquid pulp removes the long fibres from the liquid.

The long fibres are then softened by the addition of water and amine oxide. Then the softened long fibres are carefully separated and they are spanned continuously to make a yam. When the yam attains a particular size it is then sent to the markets for sale. The yam then is brought by the users which they use to weave that is to make a fabric. Then those fabric are made into clothes depending on the design they use.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You cover the main stages from planting through to fabric production, and the overview correctly identifies a nine-step process. The seasonal timing and the treatment of the fibres are also reported accurately. However, some details are added that the diagram does not show: the yarn is not described as being sent to markets or bought by users, and the diagram does not specify that clothing is made according to a particular design. The final stages are therefore less accurately presented than the earlier ones. The diagram shows yarn being spun, woven into fabric, and then made into clothing. Keep the account closely tied to the visual information and avoid inferring commercial steps or production details.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall progression, with an introduction, an overview, and a chronological account of the process. Sequencing expressions such as “Initially,” “Following that,” and “Then” help the reader follow the stages, and the paragraphing separates the overview from the details. This meets the lower-band expectations for coherent organisation and shows some of the flexibility associated with stronger cohesion. However, the repeated use of “then” makes parts of the final paragraph mechanical, while the shift from yarn to markets and users interrupts the process sequence. The reference in “which they use to weave” is also unclear. Use a wider range of linking expressions and keep each sentence focused on the next stage shown.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of process vocabulary, including “harvested,” “crushed,” “filtered,” “softened,” and “addition,” which helps describe the manufacturing stages. Some less common terms are attempted, but several choices are inaccurate or imprecise: “spanned” should be “spun,” “yam” should be “yarn,” and “bladed machine” is less precise than “circular saw.” Phrases such as “bamboo trees” and “carefully separated” also do not match the diagram as closely as “bamboo plants” and “spun into yarn.” These errors do not prevent the reader from understanding the general process, but more accurate collocations and careful spelling would make the description clearer and more natural.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including a relative clause in “which is then harvested in autumn” and a passive construction in “are then softened.” The sequence is generally understandable, but some grammatical errors remain. For example, “Its a long process” needs the possessive “It’s,” while “those fabric are made” has a plural agreement error and should be “that fabric is made” or “those fabrics are made.” The sentence “The yam then is brought by the users which they use to weave” has an unclear clause structure, and “When the yam attains a particular size it is then sent” needs a comma after the introductory clause. Aim for clearer sentence construction and check agreement, punctuation, and clause links.
