IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Write at least 150 words.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The natural and man made linear process diagram depicts the different stages of making of bamboo fabric from bamboo plants.
Overall, the diagram shows the manufacturing of clothes from plants of bamboo that are planted in spring and passing in 9 different processes to form the clothes.
As regards the bamboo plants grow in spring and harvast in autumn in first two stages of the picture. In the next three steps these plants cut into strip and crush them to make the liquid pulp then liquid filters for separation of long fibers which are main component of clothing.
A glance at the presentation shows that the fibres are soften with water and amine oxide at the 6th step and then they spin to form yam at the 7th stage which use to built a fabric. However the main procedure of manufacturing of clothes is weaving in the factory where yam is weaved into fabric and then these fabrics use in the stitching of clothes.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You identify the process as beginning with bamboo cultivation and ending in fabric and clothing, and you report several key stages accurately, including planting in spring, harvesting in autumn, crushing, filtering, softening, spinning and weaving. This gives the reader a relevant account of the diagram. However, the overview is not fully precise: it says the process forms clothes, while the diagram’s final step shows clothing items without describing their manufacture. The account also omits the final step as a distinct stage and does not clearly explain the full sequence from yarn to fabric to finished items. Some details, such as fibres being the “main component of clothing,” are interpretations rather than information shown. A more complete, neutral summary of all nine stages would strengthen the response.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a clear overall shape, with an introduction, an overview and two paragraphs describing stages. The sequence is generally easy to follow, and phrases such as “Overall,” “In the next three steps” and “at the 6th step” help guide the reader through the process. However, the progression becomes less clear in places because the stages are grouped imprecisely: “these plants cut into strip and crush them” does not clearly distinguish cutting from crushing, and the final sentence shifts to an unshown factory and stitching process. Some linking is also mechanical, particularly the repeated use of “then” and “and.” Use clearer stage-by-stage references and connect each paragraph to the diagram’s actual sequence to make cohesion more controlled.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant process vocabulary, including “harvest,” “liquid pulp,” “separation,” “fibres,” “weaving” and “fabric,” which allows you to describe the main stages. There are also attempts at more specific terms, such as “amine oxide.” However, several word-choice, collocation and spelling problems reduce precision: “yam” is used for yarn, “built a fabric” is unnatural, and “the main procedure … is weaving” overstates one stage. “Natural and man made linear process” is also an awkward description. These errors do not prevent the reader from understanding the general topic, but they make parts of the account less clear and natural. Aim for accurate process collocations such as “spin the fibres into yarn” and check spelling of key technical words.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including an overview sentence and clauses linked with “which” and “then.” The main sequence remains understandable, but some grammatical errors occur in verb forms, agreement, articles and sentence construction. For example, “As regards the bamboo plants grow” lacks a suitable clause structure, while “these plants cut into strip” needs a passive verb and a plural noun. In “the fibres are soften,” the verb form is incorrect, and “which use to built a fabric” has problems with agreement and infinitive form. The final sentence also contains unclear clause relationships. Practise accurate passive constructions for processes, such as “the strips are crushed” and “the fibres are softened,” while retaining your attempts at varied sentences.
