IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Write at least 150 words.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

The digram illustres the process of fabric

manufacturation using bambo. And how can we turn bambo into clothes in just 9 steps.

overall, that infographie demonstrates 9 steps of making clothes starting from simple bambo tree.We can notice that the operation is divided into three major sections, which are the culture of the bambo, the transformation and the production.

At spring we comence the first step by planting the bambo plants so it would be ready for the harvest season by autumn. After harvesting, the plants will be cut into strips which will be crushed later to make liquid pulp.

One crucial step is separating liquid from the long fibres by using a filter.

In the 6th step we can add water and some specific chemicals to soften the fibres. After that we arrive to tge last major section which is using the fibres to product clothes.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

You identify the process as having nine steps and give a relevant overview of its broad phases: growing bamboo, transforming it, and producing fabric or clothing. The account also correctly mentions planting in spring, harvesting in autumn, cutting, crushing, filtering, and softening the fibres. However, the response only partially covers the diagram: it does not explain that the softened fibres are spun into yarn and then woven into fabric, and it jumps from softening directly to clothing. The overview’s claim that the process makes clothes is relevant, but the final stages need to be reported accurately. The response is also 7 words below the required minimum. Add the missing stages and a little more detail about the sequence.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a generally understandable sequence, moving from planting and harvesting through the processing stages, and phrases such as “After harvesting” and “After that” help signal order. The overview also groups the process into three broad sections, which gives the reader a useful organising idea. However, the progression becomes incomplete at the end: “we arrive to the last major section” does not clearly connect softening to spinning, weaving, and the finished products. Paragraphing is limited, and some transitions are either awkward or insufficiently precise. Organise the report into a clear introduction and overview, followed by a chronological account of all stages, using explicit links such as “Next,” “Following this,” and “Finally.”

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use some relevant process vocabulary, including “harvest,” “strips,” “liquid pulp,” “filter,” and “fibres,” and terms such as “major sections” show an attempt to summarise rather than simply list. However, spelling and word-choice errors are noticeable and sometimes make the wording difficult to interpret: “digram,” “illustres,” “bambo,” and “infographie” are inaccurate, while “fabric manufacturation” and “product clothes” are unnatural expressions. “Specific chemicals” is also less precise than the diagram’s “amine oxide.” Aim for accurate spelling and natural collocations, and use the process terms “spin into yarn” and “weave into fabric” to describe the final stages clearly.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mixture of simple and more complex structures, including the purpose clause “so it would be ready for the harvest season” and the time clause “After harvesting.” The main sequence is usually understandable, but errors in sentence formation and grammatical patterns remain. The opening begins with a sentence fragment (“And how can we turn…”), and “At spring” and “we arrive to the last major section” show problems with prepositions. There are also inconsistent sentence openings and punctuation, including “overall, that” and a full stop after “bambo tree” where the overview continues. Use complete sentences, check articles and prepositions, and punctuate sentence boundaries consistently. More accurate control of these patterns would make the process easier to follow.
