IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Write at least 150 words.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The given illustration indicates the process of fabric manufacturing using bamboo plant.
Overall, the bamboo fabric is made following eight basic steps, the main product is bamboo plant that is processed through various stages.
It is clear evident from the diagram that bamboo plant is used for the production of fabrics. Initially, the preparation begins with the plantation of bamboo in spring season and the palnt is ready for harvest in autumn so plants are collected in this period. Following this, the material is cut into thin strips and transported into crushed strips for the production of liquid pulp.Subsequently, the product is passed through filter to separate large fibres from liquid. After that, water and amine oxide is added to get soft fibres.
In the next stage, spinning is done for the making of yarn. Following this, the finished product is weaved to produce fabric. Finally, the product is ready for delivery to consumers in the form of desired clothes.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You cover the main stages from planting in spring through weaving, and the seasonal timing and fibre-softening ingredients are accurately reported. The overview identifies a sequence of stages, but it is not fully clear: “the main product is bamboo plant” misstates the outcome, which is fabric and then clothing, and the diagram shows nine numbered steps rather than eight. The final clothing stage is mentioned only as “desired clothes,” while the diagram specifically shows finished garments; this could be reported more directly. Also, “transported into crushed strips” is unclear and does not accurately describe the transition: the strips are crushed to make liquid pulp. A more precise overview and clearer description of these less-developed stages would strengthen the summary.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a clear overall sequence and uses separate opening, overview and process-description sections. Linking expressions such as “Initially,” “Following this,” “Subsequently” and “Finally” help the reader follow the stages. However, the progression is occasionally weakened by unclear connections, particularly “transported into crushed strips,” which makes the movement from cutting to crushing difficult to understand. The overview also repeats the idea that bamboo is used to make fabric without clearly summarising the transformation from plant material to finished clothing. Some transitions feel mechanical because several sentences begin with sequencing phrases. Improve cohesion by grouping related stages and using precise references such as “the strips” and “the resulting pulp,” while ensuring each transition expresses the actual relationship between steps.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of process vocabulary, including “plantation,” “harvest,” “liquid pulp,” “fibres,” “spinning” and “weaved,” so the stages are generally understandable. There are also attempts at more formal phrasing, such as “the production of fabrics.” Some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or awkward, however: “the main product is bamboo plant” confuses the raw material with the final product, and “transported into crushed strips” does not express crushing naturally. “Large fibres” is less precise than the diagram’s “long fibres,” and “delivery to consumers” adds a stage not shown. Check spelling as well: “palnt” should be “plant.” More precise process verbs and collocations would make the description clearer and more natural.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex forms, including a time clause in “the plant is ready for harvest in autumn” and passive constructions such as “water and amine oxide is added.” The sequence remains understandable, but some grammatical errors occur. In “water and amine oxide is added,” the compound subject requires “are added”; “passed through filter” needs an article (“a filter”); and “the making of yarn” would be more naturally structured as “making yarn.” The opening phrase “fabric manufacturing using bamboo plant” also needs an article or plural form. Punctuation is inconsistent, with no space after the full stop in “liquid pulp.Subsequently.” Review agreement, articles and sentence boundaries, while retaining the useful variety of sentence patterns already attempted.
