IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Write at least 150 words.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
The diagram illustrates the nine different stages involved in the formation of fabric from bamboo.
The first step involves the planting of bamboo trees preferably in spring season. These trees then grow to substantial level and ready for harvesting which is the second step of the process. After that, the trees are cutted into vertical strips in the third step. In the proceeding stage, these strips are crushed to extract liquid pulp from them. The pulp is then filtered to separate long fibres from the liquid in the fifth stage. The sixth step involves adding water and amine oxide to the filtrate to ensure softening of fibres. During the next stage, probably the seventh one, these soften fibres are send for spinning so that a yarn can be made from them. In the following stage, the eighth one, the spin of fibre is allowed to weave so that it can attain the form of fibre. In the final step, this fibre is them used to make clothes like sweater, socks etc.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
You cover the main sequence from planting through to clothing, and correctly report the seasonal planting and harvesting, crushing, filtering, and the addition of water and amine oxide. However, the account is largely a step-by-step list rather than a summary of the process’s main features: there is no clear overview grouping the agricultural, fibre-processing, and textile-making stages. Some details are inaccurate or unclear. The diagram shows bamboo being cut into strips, but not specifically vertical strips; it shows the fibres being softened, not the filtrate; and the final stages are spinning fibres into yarn and weaving yarn into fabric, rather than weaving fibre into fibre. Include a concise overview and describe these transformations precisely to develop the response more fully and accurately.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The stages are presented in a generally logical order, and sequencing phrases such as “The first step,” “After that,” and “In the final step” help the reader follow the process. The response also uses a clear opening sentence to introduce the diagram. However, the repeated step-by-step framing makes the progression somewhat mechanical, and there is no separate overview to give the information a stronger overall structure. Some references are also unclear: “these soften fibres” and “the spin of fibre” make it harder to track the material as it changes from fibres to yarn and then fabric. Grouping the stages into paragraphs or broader phases, and using more precise references, would improve cohesion.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use a suitable range of process vocabulary, including “harvesting,” “crushed,” “liquid pulp,” “filtered,” “fibres,” and “spinning.” These terms help communicate the stages, and the meaning is generally understandable. However, some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or awkward, such as “formation of fabric,” “grow to substantial level,” “the spin of fibre,” and “attain the form of fibre.” “Cutted” and “soften” also show problems with word form, while “sweater, socks” has a spacing and punctuation issue. Aim for precise manufacturing terms and natural collocations, especially for the final stages: yarn is woven into fabric, which can then be made into clothing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a mix of sentence forms, including longer sentences that connect stages with clauses such as “which is the second step of the process” and “so that a yarn can be made.” Most of the sequence remains understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. For example, “these trees then grow to substantial level and ready” omits a verb in the second clause, and “these soften fibres are send” has errors in both the adjective form and passive verb construction. “This fibre is them used” also contains an incorrect word form, and “preferably in spring season” needs an article. Check subject–verb structure, passive forms, and articles, while keeping some of the complex sentence variety you already attempt.
