IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Write at least 150 words.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The diagram gives the information about manufacturing of fabric from bamboo. From its plantation to the bamboo clothes.

Overall, bamboo fabric process consist of nine steps. This is a time taking process because it starts from the plantation of bamboo to its cutting and large industrial process.

Mostly, the bamboo is planted during the Spring season. To make the fabric it is necessary that harvesting should be done during the Autumn. After the harvesting, the next step is to cut into small strips. These strips are crushed to make the liquid pulp that is first step of obtaining the fibres. Liquid pulp is passed throug the filter to seperate the long fibres from liquid. After that water and some chemicals such as amine oxide are mixed with filtered long fibres to soften them.

After softening, fibres is passed through a spinning machine to make yarn. The next step from spining is weaving. In this step fabric is made from the yarn. After the weaving fabric is manufactured and ready for the dispatch in the market.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You cover the main stages in the correct order, from seasonal planting and harvesting through processing the fibres, spinning yarn and weaving fabric. The overview identifies the nine-step process, and details such as crushing strips into pulp and filtering out long fibres are relevant and accurate. This meets the task well, but some features are less fully reported: the final stage is clothing production, whereas you say the fabric is ready for dispatch to the market, which the diagram does not show. The overview’s claim that it is “time taking” and involves a “large industrial process” is also not clearly supported. To strengthen the response, describe the final clothing stage and keep the overview focused on features shown.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall sequence and is divided into an introduction, an overview and two paragraphs describing the stages. Connectors such as “After the harvesting,” “After that” and “After softening” help the reader follow the process. This gives the report a coherent arrangement, though cohesion is sometimes mechanical because several stages are linked with similar time markers. The opening fragment, “From its plantation to the bamboo clothes,” is not smoothly connected to the first sentence, and “After the weaving fabric is manufactured” makes the relationship between the final stages unclear. Use complete, connected sentences and vary linking methods—for example, group the preparation stages together and then signal the transition to yarn and fabric production.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of process vocabulary, including “harvesting,” “strips,” “liquid pulp,” “filter,” “fibres,” “spinning” and “weaving,” which makes the stages understandable. There are also attempts at more specific language, such as “amine oxide” and “soften.” However, some word choices and collocations are imprecise: “manufacturing of fabric” would be more natural as “manufacture of fabric,” and “ready for the dispatch in the market” does not accurately express the diagram’s final stage. Spelling slips such as “throug,” “seperate” and “spining” also reduce accuracy. Aim for precise process terms and check spelling; use “clothing is produced” rather than adding an unsupported market-dispatch stage.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You use both simple sentences and some longer structures, including “These strips are crushed to make the liquid pulp that is first step of obtaining the fibres.” The sequence is generally understandable, but some grammatical errors remain. For example, “process consist” needs subject–verb agreement (“process consists”), “fibres is passed” should be “fibres are passed,” and “that is first step” needs an article (“the first step”). The opening “From its plantation to the bamboo clothes” is a sentence fragment, while “After the weaving fabric is manufactured” lacks clear punctuation or clause structure. These errors do not usually prevent understanding, but more consistent agreement, articles and complete sentence construction would improve control. Practise combining stages without losing grammatical clarity.
