IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Write at least 150 words.
Student answer (Band 7.0)
The illustration below gives information about the nine steps involved in the process of manufacturing the fabric from bamboo.
Overall, bamboo is planted, harvested, goes through different steps to be softened and then yarn is made from it which is weaved into fabric and then that fabric is used to make different items.
The process starts by planting bamboo during the spring season. It then grows till autumn and then it is harvested. It is then transferred to a place where big cutters cut them into small strips and those strips are then further crushed to make a paste (pulp).
This pulp goes through filters which strain the long fibers from it and then water and amine oxide is added to soften these fibers. After this, these fibers are spun to make yarn which goes through weaving machines and is turned into the fabric. This fabric is used to make different clothing items such as shirts and socks.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
You cover the full process and give a clear overview, identifying the progression from planting and harvesting through fibre preparation to yarn, fabric and clothing. The details are generally faithful to the diagram: you include the spring planting and autumn harvest, crushing into pulp, filtering, softening with water and amine oxide, spinning and weaving. The final reference to shirts and socks also reflects the illustrated products. This is a well-supported account of the main stages. To make the report more precise, avoid adding details not shown, such as bamboo being transferred to a place or the use of “big cutters” and “weaving machines”; simply describe the actions shown. The overview could also state more explicitly that the process has nine stages and ends with finished clothing items.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The response is organised in a clear sequence: an introduction, an overview, and then a chronological account of the stages. Linking expressions such as “Overall,” “It then,” “After this,” and “then” help the reader follow the process, including the transition from raw bamboo to finished products. The paragraphing is appropriate and the progression is easy to understand. At times, however, the repeated use of “then” and “It is then” makes the links somewhat predictable, and several stages are packed into long sentences. To strengthen cohesion, vary the sequencing language and use clearer stage groupings—for example, distinguish the initial growing and cutting stages from the later fibre-processing and textile stages.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
You use a suitable range of process vocabulary, including “harvested,” “crushed,” “pulp,” “filters,” “fibers,” “spun,” and “weaving,” which allows you to describe the stages clearly. Some choices are less precise or natural for an academic process report: “big cutters” is informal and vague, “paste” is not needed alongside “pulp,” and “different items” is general. There is also a collocation issue in “weaved into fabric”; the standard form is “woven into fabric.” These do not prevent understanding, but they limit precision and naturalness. Aim for more exact terms such as “cutting equipment,” “liquid pulp,” and “finished garments,” while checking the conventional forms of process verbs.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex structures, including the overview clause “which is weaved into fabric” and the longer sequence describing how pulp is filtered and fibres are softened. Most sentences communicate the process clearly, and passive forms such as “it is harvested” and “is added” are appropriate for this task. Some grammatical inaccuracies remain. In “water and amine oxide is added,” the compound subject requires “are added.” The phrase “which is weaved into fabric” also has an incorrect verb form; use “which is woven into fabric.” In addition, “It then grows till autumn and then it is harvested” could be made more controlled by avoiding repeated “then.” Greater accuracy with agreement and verb forms, alongside varied sentence patterns, would improve the overall control.
