IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Write at least 150 words.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The diagram illustrates the process of manufacturing fabric from bamboo plants.
Overall, the production of bamboo consists of nine stages. It begins with planting bamboo in spring and ends with the production of clothes items such as t-shirt and socks. The process involves both natural and industrial stages.
Initially, the first stage of producing fabric is to plant bamboo plants in the spring season. Next, the planted bamboo plants are harvested by the farmer in autumn, which is cutted into strips . Then, the strips are crushed to make liquid pulp, which is filtered to seperate long fibres from liquid.
Following this, filter pull out soften fibres. In the sixth stage, the soften fibres are mixed with water and amine oxide to make a yam. In the eighth stage, from the spin the weave is made to make a fabric. Finally, from the weave the finished clothes are manufactured such as socks and t-shirt.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You give a relevant overview of the nine-stage process, identifying the seasonal start and the finished clothing at the end, and you report several key steps, including crushing, filtering and softening. This addresses the task, but some stages are described less fully or inaccurately. For example, the diagram shows that fibres are softened with water and amine oxide, then spun into yarn; your account says these ingredients are used “to make a yam,” which confuses the spinning stage with the softening stage. The final sequence is also unclear in “from the spin the weave is made.” To strengthen the response, describe each transformation in its correct order and make the overview capture the progression from growing and processing bamboo to producing fabric and garments.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction and overview are followed by a chronological account, with transitions such as “Initially,” “Next,” “Following this” and “Finally.” This gives the reader a generally logical route through the process. The sequence becomes less clear in the second body paragraph, however. “Following this, filter pull out soften fibres” does not clearly connect the filtering stage to the next step, and “In the eighth stage” skips over the spinning stage and makes the order difficult to follow. Some linking is therefore mechanical or imprecise. Use one paragraph to group the early stages and another for the later stages, and use clear references such as “the filtered fibres” and “these fibres” to show how each stage leads to the next.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use a suitable range of process vocabulary, including “harvested,” “strips,” “liquid pulp,” “fibres” and “manufactured,” and the main subject remains understandable. There are also attempts at more specific terminology, such as “amine oxide.” However, some word choices and spelling errors reduce precision: “cutted” is not the correct form of “cut,” “seperate” is misspelled, and “yam” appears where “yarn” is intended. “Clothes items” is also an awkward collocation, while “filter pull out soften fibres” does not express the filtering action accurately. Choose precise process verbs and check spelling carefully; this will help distinguish filtering, softening, spinning and weaving rather than blending their meanings.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple sentences and longer clauses, including the relative clause “which is filtered to seperate long fibres from liquid.” The overall meaning is usually recoverable, but some grammatical errors affect clarity. In “the planted bamboo plants are harvested … which is cutted into strips,” the relative clause has an unclear reference and the verb form is incorrect. “The soften fibres are mixed” also needs a correctly formed adjective, and “such as t-shirt and socks” has a number and article problem. The sentence beginning “In the eighth stage” is structurally awkward and obscures the sequence. Aim for accurate subject–verb links and use clear sentence patterns, for example: “The harvested bamboo is cut into strips, which are then crushed.”
