IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Write at least 150 words.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
The given diagram depicts the process of manufacturing fabric from bamboo.
Overall, it can be clearly seen that there are several stages in this process and all stages are mandatory so that this process can be done.
When the first stage starts, bamboo plants are planted in the spring season, after which there is a process of harvesting the bamboo plants in the autumn season. In the third stage, the harvest bamboo is cut into strips. In the next step, strips are crushed so that the liquid pulp can be made before sending it to the filtration for the separation of long fibres from liquid. In the following stage, water and amine oxide are added to soften fibres. In the seventh step, yam is made by spinning the soften fibres.
Once the yam is made, the process of weaving to make fabric. Finally, the fabric is manufactured and it is ready to be sold in the market.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You identify the diagram as a manufacturing process and report most of its main stages in the correct order, including seasonal planting and harvesting, crushing, filtering, softening, spinning and weaving. However, the overview is too general: saying that all stages are mandatory does not summarise the process’s main pattern or endpoint. The final stage is clothing items, but you instead say the fabric is ready to be sold, which is not shown. Some details are also unclear or inaccurate, such as “harvest bamboo” and “yam” for yarn. To strengthen the response, give a concise overview of the progression from growing bamboo to finished clothing, and describe the final stage only as far as the diagram supports.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response follows the process in a generally logical sequence, and time and sequence markers such as “after which,” “In the next step,” and “Finally” help the reader follow the stages. The paragraphing also separates the introduction, overview and process description. However, the overview does not provide a useful summary, and the final two sentences are not smoothly connected: “Once the yam is made, the process of weaving to make fabric” is incomplete, followed by a separate statement about manufacture and sale. Use a complete sentence to link yarn, weaving and the finished products, and make the overview describe the overall transformation rather than simply asserting that every stage is necessary.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant process vocabulary, including “harvesting,” “strips,” “liquid pulp,” “filtration,” “fibres,” and “weaving,” which makes the stages mostly recognisable. However, several word-choice, spelling or word-form problems reduce precision. “Yam” is a different word from “yarn,” and “harvest bamboo” should be expressed as “harvested bamboo” or “bamboo is harvested.” “The soften fibres” is also inaccurate; use “softened fibres.” The phrase “ready to be sold in the market” adds an unsupported detail and is less suitable than naming the clothing shown. Aim for precise process collocations and check technical terms carefully.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentences, including a relative-purpose construction in “strips are crushed so that the liquid pulp can be made” and a time clause beginning “Once…”. Most of the sequence remains understandable, but some grammatical errors affect clarity. “Once the yam is made, the process of weaving to make fabric” is a sentence fragment because it lacks a main verb; write, for example, “Once the yarn has been made, it is woven into fabric.” In “the harvest bamboo is cut,” the modifier is not formed correctly, and “the soften fibres” also needs the appropriate participle form. Improve control of complete clauses and verb forms while retaining your attempts at complex sentences.
