IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Write at least 150 words.

Student answer (Band 5.0)

The picture below depicts the process of fabric obtained from bamboo.

overall, bamboo is cut into strips then it is soften by adding water and amine oxide which is then filter that mean long fibres separates from the liquid and it is again crushed to make liquid pulp. Afterwards it is spin to make yarn, here a role of yarn is made which later on weave to make fabric. which is then turn into clothes. To make the fabric very first we have to plant the bamboo first. It is sowed in the spring and it gets mature in the autumn. After it gets mature it is harvested. The harvested bamboo is taken to cutting machine where it is turn into strips. turning bamboo into strips is the first step for making fabric. This step helps to shorten the bamboo which easily helps to soften the fibres. In the softening process water and amine oxide is added which lead to soften the bamboo fibres.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

You identify the process as beginning with planting and ending with clothing, and include several accurate details, such as planting in spring, harvesting in autumn, and adding water and amine oxide during fibre treatment. However, the account only partially covers the diagram and does not report the stages in a consistently accurate order. In the overview, you say the bamboo is softened and filtered before it is crushed, whereas the diagram shows crushing, filtering, and then softening. The description also stops during the softening stage, leaving spinning, weaving, and the final clothing stage without a full account. Some added explanation, such as saying strips shorten the bamboo to help soften it, is not shown. A clearer overview and accurate coverage of each main stage would strengthen the response.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.0

There is some attempt to guide the reader through the process using sequence markers such as “Afterwards” and “After it gets mature,” and the response broadly moves from growing bamboo towards making fabric. However, the progression is difficult to follow because the overview gives the processing stages in the wrong order, then the account returns to earlier stages and repeats information about cutting and softening. The response is presented as one paragraph, so the overview and detailed description are not clearly separated. Some links are also unclear, particularly “which is then filter that mean long fibres separates from the liquid.” Organise the response into an overview followed by a chronological description, and use references such as “the resulting pulp” to make connections clearer.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The response uses some relevant process vocabulary, including “harvested,” “strips,” “fibres,” “liquid pulp,” and “amine oxide,” which helps convey the subject. However, the range is limited and several word choices or forms are inaccurate or repetitive, making parts of the process harder to understand. For example, “a role of yarn” is not the intended expression, and “it is sowed” is an unsuitable description of planting bamboo. “Turn into” and “soften” are repeated rather than varied with more precise process language. Aim for accurate collocations such as “a ball of yarn,” “is planted,” “is crushed,” and “is woven,” and use terms such as “manufacture” or “produce” where appropriate.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt to combine stages using clauses such as “which is then…” and “After it gets mature,” but the range of sentence structures is limited and complex sentences are often faulty. Errors in verb forms and agreement occur throughout: “it is soften,” “it is then filter,” “fibres separates,” and “it is turn” should use appropriate passive forms and agreement. The opening overview is a long run-on sentence, while the fragment beginning “which is then turn into clothes” is not grammatically complete. Capitalisation and punctuation are also inconsistent, including the lowercase “overall” and several missing full stops. Practise forming clear passive sentences, for example, “The strips are crushed to produce pulp,” and check each sentence for a complete clause.
