IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Write at least 150 words.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The given process diagram provides information that how cloth is formed from bamboo tree. Overall its a nine step process begins with the planting of bamboo and ends at the final products which are shirts and socks. Firstly the bamboo is sown in spring season then it is harvested after a few years in autumn. After this it is cutted into small pieces by a cutter machine.Later on these strips are crushed to make liquid pulp. Eventually the long fibers are separated from liquid solution by mean of a filter. Then these fibers are soften by adding water and amine oxide. Now the process is at final stages, the soft threads are spinned in a circular shape to make a yam like structure. Then the fiberous thread weaved with the help of machines to make a fine fabric. Finally the fabric is ready and then sewed on a large scale in industries to provide us T- shirts and socks.Lastly the shirts are send to the market to sold to the local people.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You cover the main sequence from planting and harvesting through processing, spinning and weaving, and your overview correctly identifies the nine-step process and its endpoints. Several details are accurately reported, including the seasons and the use of water and amine oxide to soften the fibres. However, some information goes beyond the diagram: it does not say bamboo is harvested “after a few years,” that fabric is sewn on a large scale in industries, or that shirts are sent to local markets. The final stage shown is clothing items, not their manufacture or sale. The overview and stage descriptions are relevant, but these additions and a few unclear descriptions mean some features are less fully and precisely reported than others. Focus on what the diagram explicitly shows.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The stages are presented in a generally logical order, and sequencing expressions such as “Firstly,” “After this,” “Later on,” and “Finally” help the reader follow the process. The overview also gives the reader a useful sense of the beginning and end. However, the response is written as one continuous paragraph, so the overview is not clearly separated from the detailed account. Some transitions are mechanical or repetitive, and “Now the process is at final stages” is an awkward link that does not clearly signal the move from fibre preparation to yarn production. The final sentences also extend beyond the diagram, weakening the progression. Use a distinct overview paragraph and group the stages into clear phases, with concise links between them.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of process vocabulary, including “harvested,” “strips,” “liquid pulp,” “filter,” “fibers,” and “fabric,” which makes most stages understandable. Some less common terms are attempted, but several choices or forms are inaccurate: “cutted” should be “cut,” “yam” appears to mean “yarn,” and “fiberous” should be “fibrous.” Phrases such as “in a circular shape” and “fine fabric” are imprecise for describing spinning and weaving. “Cloth is formed from bamboo tree” is also less natural than “fabric is made from bamboo.” These errors do not prevent understanding, but more precise process collocations and careful spelling would make the description clearer and more controlled.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including a sequence of clauses linked with “then” and “after this,” and the process remains understandable. However, some grammatical errors recur. The opening phrase “provides information that how” needs a different construction, such as “shows how.” There are also errors in verb forms and agreement, for example “the soft threads are spinned” and “the shirts are send”; passive forms are especially important in a process description. Missing articles and punctuation are visible in “Overall its a nine step process” and “in autumn. After this.” Some sentences also run together without adequate punctuation. Practise accurate passive constructions and review articles, sentence boundaries, and punctuation while retaining your useful range of sentence patterns.
