IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Write at least 150 words.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The diagram indicates how plant bamboo goes through different stages to transform into a fabric.
Overall, it has been seen that the bamboo goes into 8 steps which includes blooming of the plant in Spring so that the farmer can harvest it in autumn. Afterwards, it cuts into strips and make liquid from it. This liquid goes through a filtration process and after that two items are added to soften it which result in production of yarn. The yarn has been weaved to make it a fabric. at last any clothes like shirt or socks can be made from it
At first, the plant is grown in Spring season, after a period of time, when it comes the Autumn season, the bamboo is ready to be harvested. once its is harvested, it has been taken to cut into strips by a blade. Then the strips are crushed to produce a liquid pulp. This liquid pulps goes through a filtration process to separate the long fibers from liquid.
An addition of water and a amine oxide softens the fibers. These fibers turn into cotton which are spin to give it a shape of yarn. This yarn weaved into different shapes which result in fabric. at last, the fabric could be sew in shirts, socks or other wearing items.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You cover the main stages from planting and autumn harvesting through processing, yarn production, weaving and the final clothing products. The overview also identifies the broad progression from bamboo to fabric, and most details match the diagram. However, the overview says there are “8 steps,” whereas the process has nine, and “blooming” is not shown; the diagram only indicates that bamboo is planted in spring. The description of the final stage is relevant, but “different shapes” is vague, and the claim that the fibres “turn into cotton” is inaccurate: they are softened and spun into yarn. For a stronger response, report all stages precisely and distinguish the diagram’s stated information from assumptions.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a recognisable structure: an overview is followed by a chronological account, and sequencing expressions such as “At first,” “Then,” and “after that” help the reader follow the process. The stages are generally presented in the correct order. However, the overview repeats much of the later description, and some links between steps are unclear, particularly “These fibers turn into cotton which are spin,” where the relationship between softening, spinning and yarn is difficult to follow. The final paragraph also repeats the fabric-to-clothing point. Use clearer paragraph roles, avoid repeating the same information, and make references such as “it” and “these fibers” unambiguous.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of process vocabulary, including “harvested,” “strips,” “liquid pulp,” “filtration,” “fibers,” and “yarn,” which allows you to describe most stages. There are also attempts at more specific terms, such as “amine oxide.” Some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or imprecise, however: “blooming” is not supported by the diagram, “turn into cotton” misidentifies the material, and “different shapes” does not clearly describe weaving fabric. Phrases such as “plant bamboo goes through” and “wearing items” are also unnatural. Choose precise process verbs and nouns, and check that each term describes what the diagram actually shows.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including clauses of time and result, as in “when it comes the Autumn season” and “which result in production of yarn.” The overall meaning is usually recoverable, but some errors in verb forms, agreement, articles and sentence boundaries reduce accuracy. Examples include “it cuts into strips,” “This liquid pulps goes,” “which are spin,” and “the fabric could be sew.” There are also missing or incorrect articles in “a amine oxide,” and several sentences begin with lowercase letters after full stops, such as “at last.” Improve control of passive forms for this process, subject–verb agreement and punctuation; for example, “the fibres are spun into yarn” is a clearer construction.
