IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Write at least 150 words.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The diagrams illustrates the linear procedure of manufacturing of fabric using bamboo trees.
Overall, the this linear process of manufacturing contains total nine stages including cultivation of bamboo trees, filtering and weaving operations.
The process of making fabric starts in the season of spring by planting the bamboo trees for harvesting it takes around six months means it is autumn season. After the harvesting the bamboos as cut into multiple strips using cutter machine then it was crush by crusher to make a liquid pulp. To separate the long fibres from the liquid pulp the filtration process is used.
After getting an long fibres from liquid it was hard in initial to make them soft the water and amine oxide in added to it. In final stage by using spinning method the making of yarn is done and using that yarn weaving process was started to make fabric, by using that fabric the multiple things are made such as shirts, socks etc.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You cover the main sequence from planting in spring through harvesting in autumn, processing the bamboo, and producing fabric and clothing. The overview identifies a nine-stage process and mentions cultivation, filtering and weaving, while details such as crushing the strips into pulp and separating long fibres are relevant and accurate. However, the overview could better summarise the process’s broad phases, and some details are unclear or unsupported: the diagram gives no six-month duration, and it shows water and amine oxide being added to soften fibres, rather than describing the fibres as initially hard. The final clothing stage is also only implied by your examples. A more precise overview and closer reporting of the labelled stages would make the account more complete.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response is arranged in a clear overall progression: an introduction and overview are followed by the early processing stages and then the final stages. Sequencing expressions such as “After the harvesting,” “then,” and “In final stage” help the reader follow the process, and the paragraph breaks are appropriate. This meets the lower-band expectation of coherent organisation and shows some of the stronger progression expected at the next level. However, several links are awkward or unclear, particularly “After getting an long fibres from liquid it was hard in initial,” which makes the transition into softening difficult to follow. Some connectors are also repetitive. Use more precise references to the material at each stage and link the steps with smoother, less formulaic transitions.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of process vocabulary, including “cultivation,” “filtering,” “liquid pulp,” “fibres,” “spinning,” and “weaving.” These terms help communicate the stages, and the reader can generally understand the intended meaning despite some inaccurate or unnatural choices. For example, “cutter machine” and “crusher” are less precise than describing the actions of cutting and crushing, while “the making of yarn is done” is an awkward collocation. “Multiple things” is also vague for the finished products shown. Aim for more natural process language and precise nouns, such as “cut into strips,” “the fibres are softened,” and “garments.” This would improve flexibility and accuracy without requiring unnecessarily technical vocabulary.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple and complex sentences, including a time clause in “by planting the bamboo trees for harvesting it takes around six months means it is autumn season” and a purpose clause in “to make a liquid pulp.” However, errors in sentence structure and grammatical forms are frequent enough to make some parts difficult to read. Examples include “The diagrams illustrates,” “the bamboos as cut,” “it was crush,” and “an long fibres”; these involve agreement, verb forms, and article use. Several sentences also run together without clear punctuation, especially the sentence about spring, harvesting, and autumn. Practise forming accurate passive clauses for process descriptions, such as “The strips are crushed,” and divide longer sequences into clearly punctuated sentences.
