IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Write at least 150 words.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

The diagram illustrates the process of mading bamboo fabric. Overall, there are 9 main stages in the mading bamboo fabric process, beginnig with planting bamboos in the spring and ending with obtaining the fabic used in tshirts and socks. Along the way, they harvest them in the autumn then cutting and crashing them, the. filtre to liquid to get the soften fibers needed to make a spin.

Initially, the plan bamboo plants in the right season which is spring, they let them grow till autumn and hervest them, once this process this completed they cut the bamboos into strips then carched it into small pieces to get the liquid plump that they are going to filter later so they can separate they long fibers from the liquid, they added so water and amine oxide to the filtered fibers to become soften so they can get the spin they need to make a yarn, next they weave the yarn to finnaly make fabric so they can make from it tshirts or sockes.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You cover the main stages and give a clear overall direction, from planting bamboo in spring to finished clothing. The sequence of harvesting, cutting, crushing, filtering, softening, spinning and weaving is mostly represented, and you correctly mention water and amine oxide. However, some details are unclear or inaccurate: “get the soften fibers needed to make a spin” confuses the fibre-softening stage with spinning, and the final stage is clothing made from the fabric rather than simply fabric used in T-shirts and socks. The overview also repeats the number of stages without summarising the key transformation from plant material into yarn and then fabric. Clarifying these points and describing each stage more precisely would make the report more complete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has an overall progression, with an opening overview followed by a description beginning with planting and moving towards the finished products. Sequencing expressions such as “Initially,” “once,” “then,” and “next” help the reader follow the process. However, the main description is packed into one long sentence, so the stages and their relationships are difficult to distinguish. Some references are also unclear, as in “they added so water” and “they can get the spin they need.” The overview’s phrase “Along the way” introduces a compressed list that does not clearly connect the stages. Use separate sentences or paragraphs for the agricultural, fibre-processing and textile stages, and make each pronoun refer clearly to a material or process.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use relevant process vocabulary, including “harvest,” “strips,” “separate,” “fibers,” “yarn” and “weave,” which allows the reader to recognise most stages. However, spelling errors and inaccurate word choices are noticeable and sometimes make the process harder to understand: “mading,” “beginnig,” “fabic,” “crashing,” “plump” and “finnaly” are examples. Some expressions are also imprecise or unnatural, such as “make a spin” and “get the soften fibers.” Aim for accurate process terms and natural collocations, for example, “crush the strips to produce pulp” and “spin the fibres into yarn.” Proofreading spelling and choosing precise verbs would strengthen the description.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and complex sentence forms, including a time clause in “they let them grow till autumn and hervest them” and a sequence of clauses describing later stages. However, the long second sentence contains several grammatical problems that obscure relationships between actions. For example, “once this process this completed” has an incorrect verb form, while “they added so water” lacks a clear grammatical structure and “they can make from it” has awkward word order. There are also inconsistent tense choices between present forms such as “they cut” and past forms such as “they added.” Use the present simple consistently for a process diagram, and divide the sequence into shorter sentences with clear subjects and correctly formed clauses.
