IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Write at least 150 words.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
The process diagram illustrates how bamboo was converted into fabric. There are nine steps to manufacturing cloth from bamboo. This includes different kind of complex activities.
First of all the bamboo plant is planted in spring. After that farmers harvest the grown bamboo in autumn. In the next part they cut the bamboo into strips with round saw like cutter matchine. Following the process they crush the strips in order to make liquid pulp. On the upcomming step they filter the pulp ,and separate long fibers from liquid remaining only the small fibers.
Subsequently, the next process involved soften fibers by adding water and amine oxide. After that they spin the soften fibers to make yarn. Consequently, the second last stage involves waves to make fabric. In the 9th stage it finally converts into cloths.
In conclution, the process involves several septs to make cloths from bamboo to usable cloths. The process requires many chemicals elements and technical process.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
You identify the process as a sequence of nine stages and report several key details accurately, including planting in spring, harvesting in autumn, crushing the strips into pulp, and adding water and amine oxide to soften the fibres. However, the response only partially fulfils the task because the overview is vague: “different kind of complex activities” does not summarise the main phases or the progression from growing bamboo to finished products. Some details are also inaccurate or unclear. Filtering separates long fibres from the liquid, not “only the small fibers,” and the final stage shows clothing items rather than simply converting the material into “cloths.” Develop a clearer overview and describe the final stages precisely to make the report more complete.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall sequence, moving from planting and harvesting through processing to the finished products. Paragraphing also separates the early stages from later processing and provides a concluding sentence. Sequencing expressions such as “First of all,” “After that,” and “Subsequently” help the reader follow the process. This meets the lower-band expectation of coherent overall arrangement, and some linking is effective. However, the connectors are somewhat mechanical and repetitive, while “In the next part” and “On the upcomming step” are less natural transitions. The conclusion repeats the general idea rather than adding a useful summary. Use fewer, more varied links and group the stages into clearer phases.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant process vocabulary, including “harvest,” “strips,” “pulp,” “filter,” “fibers,” “yarn,” and “fabric,” so the reader can generally understand the stages. There is also an attempt to use more specific terms such as “amine oxide.” However, the range is limited and several word-choice or spelling problems reduce precision: “waves” appears to mean “weave,” “cloths” is not the natural term for the finished clothing, and “round saw like cutter matchine” is awkward and misspelled. “Chemicals elements” is also an inaccurate collocation. Aim for accurate process terms and check spelling and word forms, especially where a small error changes the meaning.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response includes both simple sentences and some attempts at more complex structures, such as “After that farmers harvest the grown bamboo in autumn” and “they crush the strips in order to make liquid pulp.” The sequence is usually understandable, but grammatical control is uneven. For example, “This includes different kind of complex activities” has a number-agreement error, and “the next process involved soften fibers” has an incorrect verb form. The sentence beginning “Following the process” also becomes difficult to follow because its clauses are joined unclearly. Punctuation is inconsistent, including spaces before commas. Use a consistent present tense for process descriptions, check singular and plural forms, and make each stage a complete, clearly punctuated sentence.
