IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Write at least 150 words.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
The diagram illustrate the process of how the fabric is modified by the bamboo.
The first step is to plant bamboo on spring season which is very good for planting it on season. Bamboo are more likely to be harvested on the autumn season . Bamboo are cut into strips as it will be more easy to soften it for next respective process.
After cutting bamboo into strips, they are processed into soften fibres by adding water and amine oxide. The fibres are filtered through a vessel separating long part of fibres from the mixture of water and amine oxide. The filtered strips are crused to make a liquid pulp. Afterward, The pulp are spined to make yam.
lastly, The round ball of pulp helps to make weave. The last process to manufacture of fabric is to make fabric clothes with the help of weave.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0
The response identifies the topic and mentions several stages, including planting in spring, harvesting in autumn, cutting, and producing clothing. However, it does not give a clear overview of the process or accurately report the sequence of the central manufacturing stages. In particular, it says fibres are softened before filtering and that the filtered material is spun into yarn; the diagram shows crushing, filtering, softening, then spinning. The final stages are also unclear: yarn is woven into fabric, which is then made into clothing. The response is 144 words, below the required 150. To improve, summarise the full progression accurately and include a concise overview of the agricultural and manufacturing phases.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
There is some organisation: the response moves from planting and harvesting to processing and then to the final products, and phrases such as “After cutting” and “lastly” signal sequence. However, the progression is weakened by inaccurate ordering and unclear references. For example, “The filtered strips” is confusing because the diagram filters liquid pulp to separate long fibres, while “The round ball of pulp” does not clearly refer to the yarn shown at that stage. Paragraphing is limited, and the final sentence repeats the idea of making fabric and clothes. Group the stages into clear paragraphs and use precise references such as “the resulting fibres” and “the yarn” to make the sequence easier to follow.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The response uses some relevant process vocabulary, including “harvested,” “strips,” “fibres,” “filtered,” and “liquid pulp,” so the topic is generally recognisable. However, the range is limited and several word choices or forms are inaccurate, sometimes making the process difficult to understand. Examples include “modified by the bamboo,” “spined” for “spun,” “yam” for “yarn,” and “make weave” for “weave the yarn into fabric.” “Vessel” is also less precise than “filter” or “funnel” in this context. Aim to use accurate process verbs and nouns consistently, and check spelling carefully; this will make the description clearer and more appropriate for an academic process report.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response attempts both simple and longer sentences, and the sequence is sometimes expressed through clauses such as “as it will be more easy to soften it.” However, grammatical errors are frequent and occasionally make relationships between stages unclear. Examples include “The diagram illustrate,” “Bamboo are,” and “The pulp are,” where subject–verb agreement is incorrect. There are also problems with articles and sentence construction, as in “on spring season” and “The last process to manufacture of fabric.” Capitalisation after full stops is inconsistent, including “Afterward, The pulp.” Use a reliable pattern for each stage—for example, “The bamboo is cut into strips, which are then crushed”—and check agreement, articles, and punctuation when editing.
