IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Write at least 150 words.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

The diagram demonstrates the production of fabric from bamboo in 9 processes.

Overall, the diagram illustrates that first step in fabric production is planting bamboo plants in a suitable season, which is Spring. Next step is harvesting which is done when bamboo plants have grown in large size. Mostly the process of harvesting of bamboo is done in Autumn.

In the further process, bamboos are brought into the specific machine which cuts the bamboo into small pieces. Furthermore, now fibre soften in this process by adding water and amine oxide in it, which results in the formation of soft fibre. As we go further in production process, here this solution is filtered from which susbtantial fibre pieces are taken out and pure liquid left behind.

The process diagram further shows that stips are breaking inn this process, in this way liquid pulp can be obtained. Next step is to form yarn, this process is done by spinning the liquid pulp. However, in second last procedure, these yarns are used to make farbric through weaving it. The threads which are formed are used to make fabric by combining them together in a specific way. Finally, in the last step this fabric is used to make garments, socks or shirts etc. This is the whole procedure of fabric.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You identify the process as a nine-stage production sequence and include several key details, such as planting in spring, harvesting in autumn, adding water and amine oxide, and the final use of the fabric for clothing. However, the stages are not consistently reported in the correct order: filtering and softening are described before crushing, although crushing comes first, and the account of filtering incorrectly suggests that fibre pieces are removed while liquid is left behind. The overview also focuses mainly on the first two stages rather than summarising the process as a whole. To make the report more complete and accurate, give a concise overview of the progression from growing bamboo to finished garments, then describe the stages in sequence without adding unsupported details such as harvesting only after the plants have grown large.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable paragraph structure, moving from an introduction and overview to descriptions of the process and its final products. Sequencing expressions such as “Next,” “As we go further,” and “Finally” help signal progression. However, the order of information within the body is confusing: softening and filtering are discussed before the crushing stage, and the later return to “strips” makes the sequence difficult to follow. Some linking phrases are repetitive or do not clarify the relationship between stages, while “This is the whole procedure of fabric” adds little as a conclusion. Organise the body in the diagram’s exact order, using one paragraph for growing and preparation and another for processing and manufacture; clear stage references will make the progression easier to track.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant process vocabulary, including “harvesting,” “filtered,” “spinning,” “weaving,” and “garments,” and terms such as “amine oxide” show attention to the diagram’s specific labels. However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or awkward, including “bamboos are brought into the specific machine,” “substantial fibre pieces,” and “the threads which are formed.” There are also spelling errors such as “susbtantial,” “stips,” and “farbric,” which reduce precision. Some wording is unnecessarily repetitive, particularly repeated references to “process” and “step.” Aim for concise, accurate terms such as “bamboo strips,” “liquid pulp,” “fibres,” and “finished garments,” and check spelling carefully.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response attempts a mixture of simple and longer sentences, including clauses introduced by “which” and “as,” but control is uneven. Errors in articles and sentence structure appear in phrases such as “first step in fabric production” and “Next step is harvesting,” while “now fibre soften in this process” has problems with subject–verb agreement and verb form. The sentence beginning “As we go further in production process” also contains an unclear construction, and “these yarns are used to make farbric through weaving it” has an unclear pronoun reference. These errors sometimes make relationships between stages harder to understand. Use consistent present simple forms for process descriptions, check articles and agreement, and favour shorter, complete sentences when explaining each stage.
