IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Write at least 150 words.

Student answer (Band 5.0)

Bamboo fabric is made mostly process starts in spring season. In spring season planting of bamboo plants start for its natural production and then in autumn season its harvest starts because bamboo completly ready for cuting in autumn season after harvesting the bamboo plants here starts the main process so first of all after harvesting plants of bamboo is to cut it into small pieces like strips and then crush strips into the crusher machine to make a liquid pulp from the strips of the bamboo plants, after extracting liquid from the plants then next process is happen to filter the liquid in this filtration process they separate long fibers and any other mixture from the liquid to extract the pure fiber from the liquid of the bamboo tree and then soften the fiber by addiing some amoount of water and amine oxide in the container that contains fibers then mix it well to make it soft and polite after this process we get soften fiber and roll up it like a ball in other words we can say that spin it to make a yam, so soften fiber has various features we can make clothes, carpets, socks and many weard item

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

You identify the main stages from planting and harvesting through cutting, crushing, filtering and softening the fibres, and you include the seasonal details shown in the diagram. However, the account does not fully cover the process: it omits the weaving stage and the final clothing products, and the overview is not clearly separated from the step-by-step description. Some details are also unsupported or inaccurate, such as saying the fibres are made into carpets and other items, and describing the filtering as removing “any other mixture” to produce “pure” fibre. To strengthen the response, give a concise overview of the full sequence and report only the stages and outcomes shown.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The stages are generally presented in the correct order, and sequencing expressions such as “first of all,” “then,” and “after this process” help the reader follow the process. However, nearly the entire response is one long sentence, so the progression is difficult to see and the links between stages become repetitive. Some references, including “after extracting liquid from the plants,” are unclear because the previous step describes crushing strips rather than extracting liquid. Organise the response into clear paragraphs, such as an overview followed by the preparation and manufacturing stages, and use shorter sentences with precise links between each step.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use several relevant process terms, including “harvesting,” “strips,” “liquid pulp,” “filter,” and “amine oxide,” which help convey the diagram’s subject. There is also some attempt to vary expression, for example “spin it to make a yam.” However, word choice and spelling are often inaccurate or unnatural, as in “polite” for the texture of fibres, “yam” for yarn, “weard item,” and “natural production.” Repetition of “process,” “bamboo plants,” and “liquid” also limits the range. Aim for accurate process collocations and check spelling; terms such as “soften the fibres,” “spin them into yarn,” and “weave the yarn into fabric” would be more precise.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response attempts to connect several stages using subordinate clauses and time expressions, but complex sentences are often difficult to control. For example, “Bamboo fabric is made mostly process starts in spring season” lacks a clear grammatical structure, while “bamboo plants is to cut” has incorrect agreement and verb form. Articles and plurals are also inconsistent, as in “the fiber” and “some amount of water,” and the long run-on sentence lacks effective punctuation. These errors sometimes make relationships between actions unclear. Use a wider range of shorter, complete sentences, checking subject–verb agreement and verb forms—for example, “The harvested bamboo is cut into strips, which are then crushed.”
