IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Write at least 150 words.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
The process chart illustrates how the bamboo fabric is made. It is a linear process and consists of nine steps.
Overall, it begins with agriculturing of bamboo plants to make fabric and used that fabric to make different types of cloths. The filteration stage is time consuming and important as long fibres are seprated from the liquid.
Initially, In spring seson the bamboo plants are agricultured followed by harvested those crop in next season, which is Autunm. The bamboo then cut into strips before liquid pulp is ready by crushing the strips. In the filteration step, long fibres are separated from liquid and then water and amine oxide is added in that long fibres to make it soften fibres. Thereafter, the soften fibres are converted into spin followed by weave to make fabric and finally clothes are stiched from those weaves.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You identify the process as having nine steps and describe its broad progression from planting to fabric and clothing. Several key details are accurate, including the spring planting, autumn harvest, crushing, filtering, and the addition of water and amine oxide. However, the overview is partly unclear: “used that fabric to make different types of cloths” does not accurately distinguish the final clothing stage, and the claim that filtration is “time consuming” is not shown in the diagram. Some stages are also misreported: fibres are spun into yarn, not “converted into spin,” and the diagram shows clothing items at the end rather than saying they are stitched. The response is also below the required 150 words. Develop a clearer overview and report only features supported by the visual.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, an overview, and a chronological account of the stages. Sequencing expressions such as “Initially,” “before,” and “Thereafter” help the reader follow the process, and the main stages are presented in the correct general order. However, the overview combines the process summary with an unsupported comment about filtration, making its purpose less clear. Some links are mechanically formed, particularly “followed by harvested those crop” and “converted into spin followed by weave.” The final sentence also compresses several stages and the clothing outcome into one sequence. Use clearer sentence boundaries and connect each stage with accurate, varied transitions to make the progression smoother.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use some relevant process vocabulary, including “harvested,” “strips,” “liquid pulp,” “fibres,” and “amine oxide,” which helps convey the diagram’s subject. There are also attempts at more specific terms, such as “filtration.” However, spelling and word-choice errors are noticeable: “agriculturing,” “filteration,” “seprated,” “Autunm,” and “stiched” reduce accuracy. Several expressions are awkward or imprecise, including “different types of cloths,” “make it soften fibres,” and “converted into spin.” Choose standard process terms and check word forms and spelling. For example, describe bamboo as being “cultivated,” fibres as being “softened,” and yarn as being “woven into fabric.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including a passive construction in “long fibres are separated from liquid” and sequencing clauses with “before” and “followed by.” The overall meaning is generally recoverable, but errors in sentence structure and verb forms are frequent enough to make some sentences awkward. For example, “followed by harvested those crop” needs a correctly formed clause, while “The bamboo then cut into strips” is missing an auxiliary verb. In “water and amine oxide is added,” the compound subject requires plural agreement. Capitalisation is also inconsistent in “Initially, In spring seson.” Practise accurate passive forms and agreement, and keep each process step in a complete, clearly structured sentence.
