IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Write at least 150 words.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The diagram demonstrate the process of how a fabric is produced from bamboo.
Overall, the method is very time-consuming with a sum of nine steps from producing to manufacturing. Many machines and modern technologies are used for producing a fabric.
The primary step involves planting of bamboo seeds and it is compulsory that seeds are planted in spring season. The second step involves cutting of bamboo, which can also be done using a machine. The third step helps by cutting bamboo into strips which is carried to the fourth step which involves crushing of strips which produces a liquid pulp.
The fifth step is filtering of the pulp to remove unwanted particles. The sixth step involves mixing of pulp with water and amine oxide to obtain soften fibres. The seventh step is to spin the soften fibres to make a ball of yarn which is continued with eighth step which is weaving of yarn to make a fabric and final step is to tranform the fabric into tshirts and shirts.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You cover the main stages from planting through to finished clothing, and the overview identifies the nine-step sequence. However, some details are inaccurate or unclear: the diagram shows bamboo plants being planted, not seeds, and harvesting is the second stage; cutting into strips is the third. The statement that “many machines and modern technologies” are used is not supported by the diagram, which shows only a saw and does not describe the process as time-consuming. The final stage is shown as clothing items, specifically a T-shirt and socks, rather than shirts generally. To strengthen the report, give a concise, accurate overview of the agricultural, fibre-processing and textile-making phases, and avoid unsupported claims.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction, an overview and a chronological account of the stages. The numbered sequence and phrases such as “The fifth step” help the reader follow the process. This logical progression is a strength. However, the overview’s claims about time and technology do not prepare the reader for the actual stages, and the long final sentence joins spinning, weaving and clothing production together, making the later sequence less easy to process. Some linking is also repetitive because several sentences begin with “The [number] step.” Grouping the stages into planting and harvesting, fibre processing, and fabric production would make the progression more flexible and cohesive.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use a suitable range of process vocabulary, including “crushing,” “filtering,” “pulp,” “fibres,” “spin” and “weaving,” so the stages are generally understandable. There are also attempts at more specific language, such as “amine oxide.” Some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or imprecise: “planting of bamboo seeds” does not match the diagram, “remove unwanted particles” adds an unsupported purpose to filtering, and “transform the fabric into tshirts and shirts” does not clearly describe the final stage. Spelling and word-form issues such as “tranform” and “soften fibres” also reduce precision. Use exact process terms and check compound nouns and spelling to make the account more natural.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use both simple statements and longer clauses, including the relative clause in “strips which produces a liquid pulp,” and most of the process remains understandable. However, some errors in agreement, articles and verb forms are present. For example, “The diagram demonstrate” needs subject–verb agreement, while “a fabric” is less natural than “fabric” in this context. In “the soften fibres,” the adjective form should be “softened,” and “which is continued with eighth step” is an awkward and grammatically unclear construction. The long final sentence also needs clearer clause boundaries. Aim for accurate, controlled sentences when describing each stage, and check agreement and article use during revision.
