IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Many aspects of the way people dress today are influenced by global fashion trends.
How has global fashion become such a strong influence on people's lives? Do you think this is a positive or negative development?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
Fashion has become dynamic because it constantly acts as shifting mirror of human society. This is driven by the factors including culture, technology, and psychology. In today's world, these factors greatly influenced the fashion of people globally.
People change their taste on clothing and style to copy their idols' fashion on the cinema or television dramas. For example the Korean Dramas that inluenced viewers to be sophisticated, clean, and confident on how they should look. The viewers culture will be modify through traditional to trendy based on what they watched.
Social media platforms can be accessed globally, so when a person look for someone they admire most, then it would be easy for them to copy because items can be purchased online. Models also tag their stylists and sponsors. Trending videos and post on platforms will have an expanse of how people change their styles on wardrobe.
When a person follows someone who influenced positively like being smart on choosing their way of styles then it is acceptable to norms. However, if someone do things that could possibly harm his or her finances just to copy someone's fashion then it is not an ideal part of development.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
You address both questions: you explain the influence of entertainment and social media, and you give a qualified view that copying fashion can be acceptable but financially harmful imitation is not. However, the position on whether this is positive or negative remains implicit rather than clearly stated, and the discussion of each cause is brief. For instance, the Korean-drama example is relevant, but the claim that viewers’ culture changes from traditional to trendy is not explained or supported. The final paragraph introduces a useful distinction but does not develop its consequences. The response also falls 54 words short of the required minimum, which limits the space available to explain examples and make your overall judgement clear. Develop each main point and state your position directly.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a coherent overall arrangement: it introduces the topic, gives separate paragraphs on entertainment and social media, and ends with a qualification about the effects of following fashion. This makes the main line of discussion reasonably easy to follow. Some links between ideas, however, are mechanical or unclear. For example, “For example the Korean Dramas that…” does not form a complete connection to the preceding sentence, while “then it would be easy for them to copy because…” joins several steps without clearly showing their relationship. The final paragraph also shifts from positive influence to financial harm without a clear concluding statement. Use clearer topic sentences and linking phrases, and make references such as “these factors” or “it” unambiguous.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of topic-related vocabulary, including “global fashion trends,” “social media platforms,” “stylists and sponsors,” and “finances.” There are also attempts at less common or descriptive language, such as “shifting mirror of human society” and “sophisticated,” although some choices are inaccurate or unnatural. “An expanse of how people change their styles on wardrobe” does not clearly express the intended effect, and “copy their idols’ fashion on the cinema” is an awkward collocation. Spelling errors such as “inluenced” also reduce accuracy. Aim for precise, natural phrases that explain the mechanisms of influence, such as “celebrity style,” “online purchasing,” and “shape clothing choices,” and check spelling during revision.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and complex sentence forms, including a conditional structure in “if someone do things that could possibly harm his or her finances.” Most sentences communicate the general idea, but some grammatical errors affect clarity. Examples include the missing article in “acts as shifting mirror,” the agreement error in “a person look,” and the incorrect verb form in “the viewers culture will be modify.” The opening sentence also shifts from present to past in “these factors greatly influenced” without a clear reason. Some punctuation is missing after introductory phrases, as in “For example the Korean Dramas.” Review articles, subject–verb agreement, verb forms, and sentence boundaries. More accurate control of these patterns would make your varied sentence attempts easier to follow.
